Title: An RJW AAR using BBB and lots of Pendraken figures
Post by: Shedman on 13 February 2016, 10:41:04 PM
We played our first game of BBB a few nights ago - an excellent set of rules

An AAR is on my blog http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/hyicho-ri-rjw-battle-using-bloody-big.html (http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/hyicho-ri-rjw-battle-using-bloody-big.html)

Hello Alan/Shedman

Very nice, great pictures too.

Are the Russo-Japanese Japanese mono-pose? I was thinking of using them as Chinese Warlord troops.

Cheers

That's great stuff.

I like the hills. Do you have to stick them together somehow?

The Japanese infantry come in two poses - advancing and firing. I mainly use the advancing ones - the firing ones I use just for dismounted cavalry - Leon kindly sorts out the poses I want
Just had a quick look at Osprey Chinese Warlord Armies - the kepis don't have flat board on the top like the British caps but in 10mm I could live with that

Nope - they are cut up carpet tiles from Homebase - the 2.99 ones - those ones were originally for Square Bashing hence the regular shapes. I'm off to HB today to buy a load more to make bigger irregular looking hills

@Nathan - is your painting desk clear? I'll be wanting some more Japanese painted

In future try better generalship!

If the Russians had deployed like that against me I'd have masked most of their line with a part of my force while massing 3 to 1 against another section of their line, preferably away from their artillery. The Japanese should have broken the Russian line and where were the Russian reserves? I was always taught that even if its just a very small one, ALWAYS have a reserve!

Come on guys its not rocket science, what were you playing? Space Invaders? You can do better than this!

By the way the troops and terrain looked quite good.

Very nice stuff. Don't worry about the above and just enjoy yourself - after all you're not at Sandhurst. As I said to one of my regular opponents - I'm also rubbish at brain surgery, but thankfully that's not one of my hobbies.

It's a fair point by Steeleye

In my defense it was our first game using BBB.

When I get a new set of rules I always do the same scenario - frontal assault on a ridge line. See my blog for details of RJW games with Battles for Empire, Contemptible Little Armies, Future War commander and Square Bashing. http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=solo+rjw (http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=solo+rjw)

It's a good way of seeing if the rules work. I do the same with Ancients rules and my Romano-British & Saxons

As I hadn't got round to doing a BBB test I decided to inflict the scenario on Dave & Shaun

If you want an example of exactly what you suggested then have a look at my RJW refight of Waterloo  http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/waterloo-russo-japanese-war-refight.html (http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/waterloo-russo-japanese-war-refight.html)

Funnily enough I know a woman who does that as a hobby

Many years ago I worked with a guy who every one knew as "Whipper" Wallace - on a Monday he would stagger into work having spent the weekend alternating between being locked up in a wardrobe and getting the living daylight thrashed out of him

And people think wargamers are weird

Thanks for the info. Had another look at the excellent photos on your blog and I think the Japanese are close enough for my tired old eyes to confuse as Warlord 'pork pie' cap wearers  :). If I'm willing to accept Gold Coast Regiment troops as Indochinese police then I can't be taken too seriously anyway  :D.

Cheers

It looks great!

Question: are the russians or japanese available with greatcoats?

The only Russians in greatcoats are from the WW1 Russian range - RP6 Infantry, greatcoat, fur hat, firing

I use them as dismounted cossacks

Lovely looking figures, not a war I would have thought of doing but the Japanese look really interesting. :-bd :-bd
