Despite their giving the Indians a severe bruising, the Persians were today compelled to withdraw with terrible losses. Many men but few soldiers....

Elephant armies are a real headache to forces with inadequate infantry.

I'm assuming there you are referring to enemy forces which are cavalry heavy and their horses don't like the smell of elephants.

Yes, but in addition the Persians aren't overburdened with good infantry who might see off a few jumboes.
