Title: Shiloh First Day - A Bloody Big Battles AAR
Post by: Steve J on 28 January 2016, 09:02:08 PM
An AAR of this week's game. Quite different from previous ones due to the nature of the scenario, but nevertheless very enjoyable. Details below:

Very good report. This was the first ever BBB game I played as I had a ready supply of 15mm troops, some with western theatre flags and others with stars and bars. In the game I played the Confederates failed to break through to Pittsburg Landing and the Union was awarded the victory. In fact I have just got in from the club having played BBB 1st Bull Run, what a blast we had. AAR to follow soon.

Very nice report, thanks, Steve!

I wonder whether the victory conditions should be revised to add the Hornet's Nest as an Objective. I'd welcome your thoughts on that, especially if you do go ahead and fight Day 2.

I'm glad you felt the game captured the distinctive and different flavor of the battle. And well done for holding things together in the face of the rebel onslaught!

It is certainly worth considering as one option for the Union player ( a hard one admittedly) is to abandon territory and retreat back to Pittsburg Landing to await nightfall and reinforcements the next day. Having to defend the Sunken Road and Hornets Nest area as an objective mitigates against this somewhat and also forces the Confederate player to clear the centre, rather than rushing the flanks and pushing on to the landing. If we play this again, either as Day 1 or 2, I will suggest we give this a go.

The Rebs who tried to take my flank got a very nasty gunboat surprise (surprised me as well!).
