Warband has gone down well in our household so I've decided to stop messing around with my old warmaster bases and try and paint a couple of armies using the 'proper' figures.
Santa was obliging with some undead (even if I had to order the figures, wrap them myself and look like suitably surprised on Christmas day, but who's complaining!) so I've made a start:
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/Benitogordito/950E4DAD-ACE0-4EC0-89AE-D8DBFF6ABCCF.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/Benitogordito/media/950E4DAD-ACE0-4EC0-89AE-D8DBFF6ABCCF.jpg.html)
You'll see I'm cheating already as I couldn't quite face the number/time/basing faff involved with filling out a 100x50 base so went for 60x30. Even so these took me a bit longer then anticipated (I was aiming for a base a week) but were a pleasure all the same and some archers are primed and ready to go next.
Hope you like them; my plan is by putting these up I should avoid distraction and actually finish. We'll see how that goes... :)
Thanks.
They're ace!!
I really like the strong contrasts,
:-bd =D> :-bd =D>
And as that was your first post Welcome :-h
I also use painting threads to keep my motivation up and find it works reasonably well ;)
Damn fine work, Mostyn ! :-bd
And a very warm welcome from me, too.
Like Forbes (Fred) I like the strong contrasts.
Cheers - Phil
Looking great, I hope we'll be seeing those in the painting competition!

Very nice indeed! :)
Great looking group of deaders, Mostyn, and a wonderful first post. Welcome
Love it ! They really look great mate. Give us more !!!!
Lovely work that matey! :D

Tell me about it :D.
Great figures, love the big contrast and welcome to the forum :)
Thanks for the warm welcome and kind comments. There's nothing like a little positive peer pressure to get the toy soldiers painted. :D
Glad some like the contrast - a bit of a double edged sword really as I'm sure the skeletons would take half the time without the black lining. And what kind of maniac black lines 10mm figures anyway really...
Very nice skellies. :)
Those are lovely :-bd
Second unit, some archers, just about done in my 'week' target time. Helped considerably by the reduced numbers:

I think I may add a second type of flock just to liven up the bases a little. And to help distract from the poorly sculpted gravestone :D.
Hope you like them and thanks again for all the encouragement.
Will
Again......Like those lots, Mostyn. :-bd
Cheers - Phil
:-bd
If I may? I think the basing looks great as is. :)
Very good unit! Get them in the painting competition quick!
Very impressive :D :D
:-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Given the limited palette on the figures I would also suggest not adding any more colour to the basing :-\
Gravestone looks fine to me, not everyone can afford a talented monumental mason ;)

I'm with Roy and Paul, on that. :)
Potentially
might get a little fussy with more flock on the base ?
Works perfectly for me, as is. :)
Cheers - Phil
I would agree with the other experts here, the basing sets off the figures perfectly. If you want to do something to - finish - them, then perhaps a dry brushed white highlight around the edge of the graveston might lift it a little?
Mollinary
Thanks for the responses. Looks like there's a concensus on no more flock although I must confess to being a 'fuzzy baser' at heart :). Although most of my other flock would dwarf these little fellas.
Molinary, thanks I think I'll edge the stone (I'm trying to resist squeezing RIP on to it!). And lemmy, - painting competition hasn't gone unnoticed although my dream of entering these as part of an army is likely to remain just that.
But a quick question - does anyone have any photos of painted undead cavalry? I couldn't find many after a quick search. I'm torn between painting the flat bits (i.e. not bone) on the mounts as flesh or barding. Went for barding but would be good to see how flesh works to maybe add some variety. I suspect, having painting it as barding it may have been sculpted as flesh!

thanks

Beautiful!
IT is flesh, convinced of it...
I took it to be rotting bits of flesh and skin, when I was working on the 'revamp'.
Cheers - Phil
Aye, they're boney! Well done. I like the gravestone and the amount of flock - I'd leave it as is.
Well these took a little longer than planned. Caught on the horns of failing to account for half term and a nasty bout of man-bola. They were intended to be an entry for the painting competition, so I took a little longer over them but, like all proper cavalry, their timing is a little off :).
Despite the rotting flesh looking suspiciously like tattered barding ;) these are wonderful figures and I think my favourite of the range so far.
Hope you like them.

Very nice indeed
Take care

Superb work there.
Very nice indeed, that man ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil
Excellent work, the whole army painted to that standard will be awesome.
They're brilliant :-bd
Thanks you for all the kind comments. Next up, and having taken longer to finish than any five 10mm figures have a right to, are the necromancers:

I have an unhealthy love for the liche with the long hair and dressing gown style coat. He just needs to be holding an undead cat and he's the perfect seventies supervillain/porn magnate (are the two mutually exclusive?)!
Hope you like them. and thanks again for the encouragement.
Very, very nice, Mostyn ! :-bd
Super work.
Cheers - Phil
Very cool!
that's a lovely bit of work
Really good. :)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Fantastic - love it.
Thanks for all the nice comments.
Well these have taken a little longer than intended. :-[ Or at least I got distracted more than I was hoping (but probably not expecting..). This weekend, however, I found myself free from wife and children interference and with only a modest DIY task list so, rather than being drawn like a moth to a flame to a new project (soon to be another half finished one), I thought I might actually try and finish off something I'd already started:
Undead Lord (secretly quite leased with this unit).
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/Benitogordito/warband/Undead_Lord_2.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/Benitogordito/media/warband/Undead_Lord_2.jpg.html)
The rest of the new stuff
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/Benitogordito/warband/New%20Stuff_2.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/Benitogordito/media/warband/New%20Stuff_2.jpg.html)
Gratuitous 'bat shot' as I have a strange affection for the flying ratty chaps (and they're always out of focus when taken with the other figures!).
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/Benitogordito/warband/Bats_2.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/Benitogordito/media/warband/Bats_2.jpg.html)
And the army in all its evil glory. I'll probably add some crossbowmen later (hopefully this decade).
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/Benitogordito/warband/Army_shot_low_2.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/Benitogordito/media/warband/Army_shot_low_2.jpg.html)
Now it's just a matter of choosing what to paint as opposition - when are the dragon men out again?
Hope you like them and thanks for looking.
Will
Very nice, the bats are cool - the acrylic stands are much better then the old lead ones.
You should be pleased with the command base! Or have you actually leased it from the dark lord?
Really nice army! indeed.
Those look absolutely cracking ! :-bd
Forbes (Fred) is absolutely right about the acrylic stands......They almost disappear.
(Oh...alright.....I hadn't even noticed they were there, to start with. :-[)
Cheers - Phil

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Yeah, all leased from the dark lord at a reasonable rate with no catches. That guy is pretty reliable right?
