Title: Aurelian
Post by: Westmarcher on 19 January 2016, 10:23:32 AM
Ancients fans. Aurelian (by Sam Mustafa).
No dice, pdf and cards only. Covers the 3rd century. Four armies: Roman, Persian, Sarmatian and a generic "Germanic."

Q1.  Any good?

Q2.  If so, and Pendraken miniatures used, what ranges to use? Late Roman? Sassanid Persian? Dacian for the other two?

I'm expecting to get a go of these in early February.

I have these and they're good fun. I'm looking at romans and Persians from Pendraken but the range is lacking some figures I need.

Looks like a period specific cross between some of the mechanisms for Blucher and Maurice - which should be good, IMO :D

As I don't need another Ancients game (or as Ms. Pixie would say, *anything gaming related* :D), I doubt I'll get a copy sadly :(

Was losing interest from the moment "No dice" was mentioned but ... PDF only for a game that relies on cards? One less temptation then :)

Thanks, guys. Responses suggest early days yet (only Ferb has actually played yet and this was positive). Understand Ithoriel's reluctance about the 'no dice' aspect but this balanced by the success of Mustafa's other games Honour series rules (and Nathan's on buying yet another rules set). Will therefore be interested to read about your experience next month, Leman.

Finally, agree with you, Ferb, on the Pendraken range. If these rules prove to be popular this might also be an opportunity for expansion there ..... especially, if a Warband Historical also comes along later? Over to you Leon.

Did anyone ever get any further and get a game of these and if so what did you think if them?

The guy I was supposed to be playing these with was so disappointed with them he refused to play them.

would they be more like Impetus than DBM or something completely new?

Pretty new tbh, and they have some interesting twists. Combat system is like Star Wars Armada, where you start in a basic dice and then go up or down different coloured dice depending how good you are. Movement is cars driven, poor troops only move one one colour, better troops on two, three and so on.
The rules at the moment are 4 A4 sides long, but knowing some of the play testers and their desire for clarity, will get longer... ;D
