It's that time of year again! The 2016 Pendraken Painting Competition opens on February 1st and runs all the way through February. The 2015 competition had 229 entries (winners can be seen here: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,11625.0.html ), all of a consistently high standard, so we're really looking forward to seeing what this year holds!
As mentioned, the competition will run throughout February, meaning that the leap year will give everyone an extra day to get your entries in. The closing deadline will be midnight on the 29th February.
The big news for this year is our new category: 'Warband Base' This category does exactly what it says on the tin, so any single Warband base, whether it's a cool command stand or a unit of warriors crammed in like sardines!
The only other change from last year is that we've dropped the 'single base' requirement for the other categories, allowing multiple bases to be lined up and entered, as long as they still fall within the figure quantity rules. As folks have their figures based up on all kind of size bases, instead of being restricted to a single base with maybe only 4 or 5 figures on it, you can now line up several bases to get a better 'unit' look.
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. Includes single figures, artillery bases, command stands, etc.
Open - Army! - Armies, Units, Dungeons, whole table setups, anything!
Warband! - Any single base for use in our Warband rules, this can be a command stand, a unit of warriors, an artillery base, etc.
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). Like last year, we are no longer allowing montage images to keep a level playing field. You can however edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months.
6. You can post WIP photo's if you wish, please create a new thread for these. You can also post extra photo's of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by a team of five judges. Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
We've got some great prizes lined up once again and we'll be announcing those in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that.
So, things to remember:
Competition opens - February 1st!
Closing deadline - Midnight, February 29th!
There's still time to order any extra figures you need, so get them in to us asap to make sure they arrive in good time! There's been some excellent painting shown on the Forum over the past 12 months so we're looking forward to seeing some of it in the competition.
If there's any questions, let us know!

It's that time already :o :o :o
God, I'd better get my skates on and paint/finish something!!!
What to choose!
Time to paint something i guess ;D
Yep, I've a few bits and pieces that I can take part with :)
I shall watch with interest. Unfortunately I can't get my figures beyond "look half decent on the wargames table" and I'm spending time painting to get stuff on the table. Quite happy to show it elsewhere on the forum.
Your stuff is better than mine DP, go on, pick a category and go for it!
Make a new category!
Best use of a Minibits MDF base. Requirements: proof that its from Minibits (Leon can check his records - photo of purchase at a show), no figures/vehicles, base has to be modelled/painted/made to represent a landscape be it rural/country/dungeon/lunar etc, etc. Terrain items such as flowers, trees, walls, furniture etc, etc can be used (figures painted as statues is exceptable).
Forum members vote on a winner in a forum poll.
Winner receives a pack of Minibits MDF bases ;D
100% not Pendraken Miniatures Painting Competition official! :D
Good luck all. I'll be watching from the sidelines this year so looking forward to seeing some cracking entries :-bd
Did you miss out the rule about Kev1964 not being allowed to enter? :d
The entries get better every year. Really looking forwards to the 2016 parade! :D
An extra 24 hours of sweating time this year! :D

I think this might be the only category I have an entry for, at the moment.

When I started reading this I thought it was going to be an entry made purely from minibits MDF bases!
Now THAT could be a challenge! Anyone up for it?
Is that exceptable meaning it can't be included or should it read acceptable meaning it can be used?

As I get older my hands are getting a little more shaky. Currently making a bit of a pig's ear of Prussian artillerymen, although they'll probably turn out ok in the end.

Brace them against the table-top, to keep them steady, Bob.
Trying to solder a couple of tiny 'bits' with my hands 'floating free', the other day, you'd have thought I was suffering from Parkinson's. X_X
And before anyone jumps on me......That's
not meant to be funny.

My dad worked in the field of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. He told me so much about the effects I worry when I can't remember stuff
Count me in for this.
It'll be the kick-start for my High Elves. :D

It just says stuff painted within the last 12 months and not previously involved in any competitions. Unless I've missed a bit?
Last year I entered a painted miniature that I'd shown on this forum in another thread, prior to the comp - and it had been seen on the Steve Dean forum as well.
That's what I presumed Roy. But just wanted to make sure

Yep, as Roy says above, as long as it's been painted in the past 12 months then you're good to go. It's not really a 'What can you paint right now' competition, more a celebration of what everyone has achieved over the last year.

Oh! I suspect a few of us are planning the annual February stress paint! :)
Yeah! just got my internet back up and running in time, down since Xmas and was getting alittle worried.
Looking forward again to seeing the increasing standard of painting, which has risen yearly. This means though a bad head for a few days when it comes to judgeing.
Good luck to all
Andy Mac
Totally agreed, Andy - it's a nice headache to have though. I'm delighted to be judging again - and looking forward to it once more.
And, dear entrants, don't forget, I drink Single Malt - none of that blended rubbish. We can do an internal investigation into competition-fixing in about another couple of decades once it's truly out of hand (FIFA anyone?!) <) :d <)
I go with Nik about the single malt, but please only Scots will do. I may live in Wales but I don't have to drink their whisky :( (any one who has tried Penderyn will know what I mean.

I would suggest to change a bit "pre 20th century foot" and incrase the number of figures to 18 - its 3 stands of 6 on one movement tray.
Most of LoA and AWI regiments comes this way.
Please, Leon do this and I promise to rock this category this year :)

+1 for changing the pre-20th foot to an 18 figure limit as well :)

We can have a look at changing the rules for next year's comp, but it's a bit late for this year really as everything has been announced already over the interwebs...

Yes its a sort of negative bribe (well call it blackmail) "either you vote my figues painted in the dark with a 1" brush and household emulsion as the top figure in the competition, or I supply MIL with 3 gallons of White lightning and you spend the next three weeks in casualty with said MIL." :)
This is of course if your still breathing after Mrs T finds out that its down to you that MIL was sent the White Lightening in the first place.
On a serious note I will enjoy looking at the entries.
Even with an optivisor, good light, W&N series 7 brush, 12 hours sleep, and six months dedicated painting time I would not be able to equal most of the runners up, let alone the winners.

Yes, you could, Mark ! Anyone here
could......If they practiced, and took their time. (If they HAD the time.....There's the rub)
To me, the only difference would be the amount of time it would take.
I'm prepared to be shot down in flames here.....But isn't the case that
most folk paint to a standard they're content with....So they can get the wee chaps on the table as soon as possible ?

Some of it is about time :-\
- Time to find the techniques
- Time to experiment and learn the techniques
- Time to master the techniques
- Time to apply the appropriate techniques
But it is also about Talent which bring the techniques to life
- Talent with colours
- Talent with a brush
- Talent with selecting and composing figures on a base
- Talent with basing
This tune Leon posted a few days ago sort of shows what I mean, most of the band have taken the time to learn the techniques
The drummer has TALENT, or at least thinks he has ;)
Quote from: Leon on 19 January 2016, 05:59:00 PM

I have a plan to improve my performance this year.
I also know how to make my figures look better in the competition. It's all about the photograph. I plan to photograph my entries from at least 12 foot away, then photoshop the result.
The drawback to this cunning plan is that my photoshop skills are as good as my figure painting skills. :-\

Hmmm... Painting competition time again - time to slink away with my pitiful painting efforts while muttering "Please move on, there's nothing to see here - No, really, there's - NOTHING - to see here...." :D :'( :'(
Nice selection of prizes and no doubt some very worthy winners once again.
If nothing else, the entries give me standards of painting to aspire to.
As to securing any of the prizes, I have more chance of successfully dating Claudia Schiffer :)
I'm putting my chances on the Euro millions. Claudia turned out not to enjoy hill walking.
So
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray
Well I have 3 elephants, each with 3 riders - does that count ?
I have kids, re-writing interpretations of rules is a common occurence. I never thought I would have to include sign language as part of the no swearing rule

Can I ask, for the 'Warband' section of the comp. are units that are on smaller 6x3cm bases allowed as that is what we use to play? or do I have to put them in the fantasy/Sci-Fi section?
Thanks :)
Just one day left before 1st of February, I wish everyone luck and I look forward to seeing plenty of entries. To my fellow judges, I hope you have your headache remedies at hand for the end of the month. :D

Just started getting some Goblins ready for Dragon Rampant and entry into the competition. The look bigger than the historical figures, so may get used as Orcs instead. Nice to have a deadline to paint too :).
One day and we can post pics? Should get started i suppose!
On the plus side, i have filed down the bases on the guys i want to use yesterday.
I hope i can get around to finishing something with the baby and all! But i have entered every year since i bought pendraken minis and i will try to get in this year too!

For this year the Warband category will only be 100x50mm bases I think, just to see what people have come up with on the larger bases. If there's not a lot of takeup in the category then we'll look at expanding it to include any 'Warband' base next year.
Thanks for the reply Leon, no problem, I will enter my figures into the Fantasy/SciFi category instead.

Hello All
Being a forum newbie, what's the most effective way to add photos to a category reply? Attachments? I don't seem to have the option to paste images within the text box.
Thanks in advance.
Martin
It depends. If you're a really good painter, then unfortunately no.
Otherwise try the help here

Oh! And welcome.
Welcome to the forum Martin :-h
The best way is to upload the picture to one of the various free photo storage sites, I use photobucket but there are several
Then use the Insert Image button (second row, third from left on reply) and paste the link to the picture provided by the storage site.
There are a couple of threads with more info that I can't find at the moment, feel free to ask further if the above is not clear
And FSN has pointed you to one of them while I typed this ;)
Welcome from me, as well, Martin.
Cheers - Phil
Thanks to all for the quick responses. I managed to reduce the file sizes and submit as attachments.

Martin

What!!!!!!!!!! You mean I still had a whole day of painting? I could have finished those militia or the Light Infantry or both :'(
Ok lets see, get home from work at 2 pm, 5 hours difference between the UK and Canada, count back 5 hours from midnight makes it 7 pm giving me 5 hours of painting, oh less 20 minutes to do the rubbish........ 4 hours 40 minutes, yes I could do a unit!!!! :D
Oh and I think I put to many pics in the posts!!! That will teach me to fully read the rules page! :o
From what we've seen of your painting speed you could get a corps done!
And that's all folks, the 2016 Pendraken Painting Competition is now closed!
Thanks to everyone for their entries, there are some fantastic pieces of work this year and good luck to all of you. The winners will be announced at 6pm on Monday 7th March, so make sure to be online!
Good luck to all, especially the judges ;) :D

Yeah, it gets a bit tricky! I'm setting aside August (with October as a reserve month) this year to paint for next year's competition... ;)
If I start now I MIGHT get something done for next years competition, at the rate I'm currently painting.
Still won't achieve results up to the standard of some of those entries.
Well done and good luck to all who entered.
Don't envy the judges their job!
The judges have a very hard job. I am in awe of the amount of painting talent out there.
Best of luck to all the entrants
