Title: FoG: end of a game?
Post by: gregernest on 10 January 2016, 07:25:45 PM
Slitherine has marked all the books down for clearance.

Has the ruleset really been so unpopular as to go out after only a couple of years?  :(

Too bad, because I liked them.  Then again, maybe I'm just some crazy Yankee...  ;)

To my knowledge players seemed to be much happier with FOGR than with either FOG or FOGN.

It replaced DBM wholesale on the UK tournament circuit.  Its still played.  I picked up all the books cheap a  few years ago.

Its been very, very popular.  I understand its still going, but not as strongly as it was?

I stopped playing it about 2-3 years ago.

Its hardly surprising, Slitherine's core business is PC gaming and given the games have been circulating for some time now I would imagine everyone who plays the games pretty much has a rule set by now.

I have played all three. Of the three FoGR plays best and FoGN isn't that bad but FoGA never really gripped me.

I may be wrong but there has most definately been a shift towards simple rule sets played over a couple of hours which none of the slitherine offerings really do.

I think they will remain the staple of the competition circuit for some time to come but dont think they have ever had universal appeal, nor are they geared towards introducing new players to wargaming.

Shame really as they aren't bad games by any stretch compared to some of the dross that appears on a regular basis.

I've never played them, how do they compare to Warlord's Pike & Shotte / Black Powder rules?

Cheers
Ian

Sorry Ian

although I own Pike and Shotte I have never got around to playing it so cant offer a comparison. Saying that I'm not a huge fan of Black Powder so I doubt any comparison I would have been able to make might have been negative.....

I like FoGR purely because units don't really race around the table. Artillery is effective if you have good fire lanes. The Pike and Shot units feel like units of pike and shot and although shot is effective you still get quite a bit of push of pike to sort the boys from the men!

Black Powder/Pike and Shotte are much more flexible than the FOG stable, as the rules can be kept relatively simple or made more complex with the adoption of sub-period rules from the period books. Again, not all the sub-period rules need be adopted, consequently these are not competition rules.

I just found a pdf of FoG online, seem to be quite long about 120 pages - half as long again as Pike and Shotte. Don't think I'll bother  :)

Cheers

Hi

I completely agree with people who say that FoGR (my choice of rules for ECW) feel and seem to play better than FoGA&M. What I cannot understand is why, as the basic rule mechanisms are the same.  :-\

Still think it's a shame that they will no longer be available.

Cheers Paul

Just imagine what you might get on ebay when it comes time to retire.

Interesting that some folks think FoG is only a couple of years old - the first event post-release was Godendag in January 2008 !  8 years is a long time ..

It's also still the biggest ancients competition set in the UK in terms of players listed in the rankings (I.e. entering at least one event in the last 12 months), although outside the UK it does seem to have fallen away quite steeply in the last couple of years
