Title: Going to CANCON - Battlefront WWII Participation or DBR - help me decide!!
Post by: GrumpyOldMan on 12 December 2015, 05:58:38 AM
Hi All

I'm thinking of going to CANCON this year after many years away and I was tossing up whether to go along and have a look at the Battlefront WWII game set in Shanghai 1937 or go into the DBR tournament. Help me decide.

Has anybody used the Battlefront WWII rules? Would it be interesting enough to keep me occupied? If I go for this then I don't have to worry about freighting down an army for DBR.

Haven't played DBR for years (and not with DBR 2) so would be easy meat (oh, nothing's changed then  :) ). Really going just to catch up with some other GrumpyOldMen

Be interested to hear your thoughts  on Battlefront WWII - from the same stable as Fire and Fury.

Cheers

No idea on the rules Grumpy, but given that you've been away for a few years or more, I'd suggest going to see the Shanghai game, chat with other Grumpies and just take the show in. When we've put on demo games, it is quite suprising what you don't get to see. Hope this helps?

I'd rather play than watch a game  :D

Hi Grumpy

Battlefront WWII are IMHO the rules that best capture the feel of a Second World War battle. That said they may appear to be a bit complicated the first few times that you use them. In particular the use of artillery (again IMHO) is particularly realistic and the 'spotting' rules i.e. can one unit see another, so important in 'modern' periods, are by far the best I have come across. The basic unit is a company and is made up of a number of bases, typically 9 to 12 for an infantry company.

If playing them for the first time it pays to start small with no more than a couple of companies a side and it can really help if you can play with someone familiar with the rules.

Here is a link to the Battlefront WWII website with some very helpful people on the forum and in the resources bit there are some tutorials:

Hope that helps.

Cheers Paul

Hello Paul/T13A

The rules are listed as Battlefront (Simultaneous), can't find anything about simultaneous on the website/forum. The participation game sounds fairly big too:-

"During the first stage of the Battle of Shanghai (13-22 August), the Chinese committed some of their best troops to the fight. However, their attempt to eradicate the smaller (but better-equipped) Japanese force was complicated by the fact that the city centre hosted large neutral districts (the International Settlement and French Concession), and the main waterways were effectively under Japanese control. The conflict pitted the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army, as well as armed Japanese residents (Jikeidan), against an eclectic mix of Chinese National Revolutionary Army units (some German-trained and equipped), the local paramilitary Peace Preservation Corps (Pao An Tui) and armed Chinese Police units, as well as mobsters from the notorious Green Gang. Moreover, the possibility that the British-led, multinational Shanghai Volunteer Corps might be dragged into the fight was a very real one."

Sounds exciting - the scale hasn't been listed but I imagine that it will be done in 15mm. This is the sort of action I'm trying for in 10mm.

Cheers

Hello Paulr

As all too often happens, my plans were overtaken by real life and I am down in Melbourne with my elderly mother and I very much doubt I will get there at all :(. I will have to be satisfied again with photos and annoying emails to other grumpyoldmen organising events. Maybe next year - sigh.

Cheers
