Hello everyone!
Does anybody have an opinion on the Piquet rules? I have the core rulebook and I'm thinking about picking up Cartouche for gaming some WSS battles.
If not Cartouche, then what is everyone's go-to game for WSS? I'm looking to play full battles or at least significant parts of battles and not just skirmishes (roughly 1" = 40 yds or so).
Thanks!
We enjoyed Black Powder with Last Hussars "And Blenheim Palace" suggested amendments but has since switched to Maurice. Which I enjoy but am thinking should do something for WSS to limit manoeuvre/column-in-out abilities...
Hi Coppelius,
I am afraid I haven't played Piquet WSS rules and I have only played Piquet twice. I think they are the kind of set of rules you either think are the best rules ever or the worst ever. Did do it for me I am afraid but I would suggest that if you have played Piquet for other periods and liked it or if you have not played but like the look of it then it will be fine for WSS for you.
I would though say that at the kind of scale you mention you will probably find it difficult to easily do the larger battles. Blenheim (the smallest of the big 4 battles) would need a table around 16 foot or longer at 1" = 40yds and loads a figures.
You will of course be able to do parts of a large battle like this and smaller battles easier.
For large battle we use a set called Twilight of the Sun King. This has been around for some time from the Pike and Shot society and a new version should be out next year. The new version uses a sliding scale which you can set yourself but is something like 1" = 100 - 120 yards. In that scale Blenheim is on an 8 foot table, probably 2 players a side for an afternoon/evening game.
I hope this helps
I found Field of Battle 2 (Piquet rules for 1700 to 1900) gives a much more streamlined and engaging game than the original Piquet, in that the winner of the card draw plays his cards, then the loser plays the same number of cards. The biggest fag now is the preparation of the armies, rather than watching your opponent draw 18 cards, then win again and draw another 6, then you win, but only get to draw 2, then he wins and draws 14 (yes, this does happen in original Piquet).

You are dead to me.
Sorry :D
We're inveterate switchers ;)
Thanks for all the replies, guys. Lots of grist for the mill. I've tried a number of different rulesets and every set so far has been awesome in some parts and in others...not. So I always seem to be playing some kind of hybrid game, using the best parts of each -- but then games tend to feel like playtesting and not playing, if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be checking these out.
