Erm ... a human fighter, a human(?) ranger, an elven archer, a dwarf fighter, four hobbits (one with magic armour, a magic sword and the most powerful magic ring in the game!) and a feckin' ARCHANGEL (who can cast "Resurrect" on himself!) ... I'd join me THAT party!

I hear they're looking for a cleric...
Might be better to be a priestess...

Cleric? Why a cleric? Clerics join you and your spouse in holy matrimony boosting your chance of children by 5%, bury you so necromancers can't raise your corpse and admit you to the congregation of the faithful making you marginally less susceptible to magic (if you stick to your deities rules).
What Boromir needs is a HEALER. Someone good with potions and poultices or a RANGER who's good with herbs and bandages ... and Oooh look! They've got a ranger.
Or maybe an ALCHEMIST, though they're as likely to make you turn into a chicken and then explode as heal you. :)
As to female party members ... 12 dwarves .... 10 mites and an elim to a house in Treacle Mine Road that at least three of them are female!

So that's Gimli, Boromir, Gandalf & Legolas covered. And Gollum . . .

Heh. We had a quick campaign this summer - first time I've played an RPG since about 1982 - using the Sword & Wizardry (an OD&D retro-clone, or whatever they're called) rules.
'Twas great fun, but that might just be the nostalgia factor.
Cheers, Martyn

Doesn't mean they can store centurions...
Just started a new D&D campaign, first in about 30 years, using 5th Edition.
It's actually great fun but like most games depends a huge amount on the quality of the DM and the other players.
I've always thought that in many ways D&D is possibly the ultimate skirmish game, one player, one character.
Incidentally Gandalf is only about 4th level as he can't cast fireball and all that coming back from the dead malarchy is just a dodgy bit of DM-ing.
Having survived some of your campaigns Dan, I look forwards to hearing more! ;D
Played White Box D&D (replacing our Roneo'd copies of the original three book version) at Uni but moved over to SPI's Dragonquest in 1980 and despite the occasional foray into Hero System and GURPS and the occasional "oh gods, now I remember why we gave this up" game of D&D have stayed with Dragonquest and home-grown variants ever since.
I use Columbia Game's HARN setting as my background but the Harnquest rule-set was a little too hardcore for my taste. Even if the players beat those half dozen orcs ... sorry, gargun ... half the party would be dead a week later having succumbed to infection or disease. Possibly realistic but not fun.
Some day I must get back to regular FRP sessions.
