Title: Operation Thunderbolt (Raid on Entebbe)
Post by: jeffb on 21 November 2015, 04:46:41 PM
Hi,
Havin spent my childhood in East Africa and living 30 miles from the Ugandan border at the time of the raid. I have an interest in the Entebbe Raid. Its one of the many modern African scenarios, i like to portray.
Just after some help for suitable figures to use as the Israelis, Ugandans and Terrorists.

Many Thanks

Jeff

Tomix Airport Control Tower

Tomix, i think is plastic.

Just need a suitable building for the Terminal.

Hargeisa Airport. Got the Timecast one. Gamecraft miniatures also do the same airport in 6mm, 15mm and 20mm. I have enquired about 10mm and 25mm.

Hi Jeff

First welcome to the Pendraken forum.   I am just finishing a small Latin American airport for a Christmas game.   My terminal and Control Tower is a modest affair.   However about a decade ago I gamed Entebbe in 25mm.

Two things on scenery ;  You have cracked the Control Tower.  You want a few other buildings - the scale for aircraft is 1/144 - put 1/144 airport buildings in your search engine and you will get some ideas.   There are  downloads of ramps, taxi ways and runways -  cut up a grass mat and edge the concrete  - or you can buy ready made on ebay.  I ran my runway at an angle to the board to give the effect that its just one end represented.

Secondly, you need a biggish building to serve as the terminal.   I often take 15mm or 1/87 and blodge with 10mm scale doors, windows and fittings.  Have a look at Pikestuff - they do big H0 &00 engine sheds - add a row of front  windows and n gauge internal furnishings and you have your terminal.

Figures .  Israeli - Vietnam range Australian- the headdress is wrong, (field cap not bush hat but you can file it down
                           - don't  forget white recognition band) - you can also pair the FN down to an Uzi.
Ugandan -  use Falkland paras or Australians  (Ugandan uniform is khaki drill and FN)
Terrorist -   Minifigs -  modern ranges -  Special forces and African Insurgents

Vehicles -   Pendraken Landrovers,
Mercedes - I only see a modern Busch model in n gauge
Soviet APC BTR40 - use White Scout Car (Pendraken)

The C-130 is available in 1/144 from a number of manufactures . You only need one.
                   Optional - a row of Mig 21 fighters -
Optional -  a counter attack with a troop of  T-34/85s and BTR152s (give Israelis a few Charlie Gs

Do send us some images as you build.

Cheers.

Hi,
After more web searching found these set of rules. For use with AK47 but can be used for this scale with minor adjustments.

Welcome to the forum Jeff.
Are you just doing round the terminal or are you doing the flight line and the migs?
Looking forward to seeing pictures.
Regards
Sean

I'll be doing the terminal and Migs. I've found a site for building a 25/28mm Entebbe. I have worked out the measurements for N gauge (10-12m). I have plans to do an Operation Thunderbolt2 with Israeli C17 Globemaster III or Israeli Airbus A400M. Its coming together slowly, but it will be after Xmas before i properly start it.

Thinking of using FLA13 Argentine Special Forces with SMG as the Israelis and Minifigs Arab Infantry as the Ugandans.

Doesn't help with the figures you want, but have you seen this (http://www.matakishi.com/buildingentebbe.htm).

I find this chaps site really inspirational, although cork as a building material is probably far too thick for 10mm.

Cheers, Martyn

Cheers Martyn,
I'm using them as guides. I've worked out the scale for the Radar Tower, Control Tower and Large, Small Terminal. I've worked it out to be nearly 1 ft long with all the buildings. Its gonna be my project for next year. Collected alot of info and will start early Jan.
