Heartbreaking and horrifying but, sadly, not entirely unexpected.
Terribly, terribly sad on so many levels.
:( :( Heartbreaking
Terrible for all involved - victims, witnesses, families and friends. At times I despair of mankind. Therefore, heartening to see solidarity being expressed worldwide by right thinking humans. Here's another example of how support is being expressed worldwide for France.

As some already know, with both daughters currently in Paris, Monday can't come soon enough for me.
This is an apalling act of terror and our thoughts will be with
our French friends. :(
Thank you guys.
I'm just back from the railway station to pick up my daughter, she was in Paris (she's studying photography). My family's Ok. My thoughts to the victims and their families.
All of the above. :(
Glad to hear your daughter & family's OK, Ronan.
Cheers - Phil
Prayers go out to all.
My thoughts go out to our neighbours, and glad to hear everything is ok Ronan!
But as Ithoriel said, sadly not unexpected. We just don't know where and when!
Ronan, Good to hear your daughter is OK
Beyond that words fail me...
Year on year I am increasingly disturbed by "Lest we forget." How can we forget something we've never, as a species, learned?
All right, stop it. Too much compassion and good sense here. You're forgetting what being human is all about!
I was 700 meters away from one if the shootings, visiting a friend. I'm safe in Marseille today.

Glad to hear that, Yann.

Glad to hear that you are safe Yann.
:o glad you are okay sir.
Good to hear
My sister is ok, as are my inlaws, who live on the other side of one of the places where shooting occured...
That's good to hear as well. 'seb'.
Cheers - Phil
Phew. Glad all are okay Seb
I'm very saddened by the events in france I do wonder if humans will ever behave properly.
Take care
Andy

Who let the cat out of the bag again? My sympathies are with the French.

Dunno - and I agree with you about the French.

The french gouv bombed away as a response.
Really ?
More death as an answer to death ?
And John Oliver nails it...

Wow that is so good Lemmey, thanks.
Thank you Lemmey.
I laughed ! ( not that easy today)
You're right Barbarian. This was not the correct answer...
We must stay a free democratic country.
I hope nothing bad's going to happen in another place/country.
I couldn't believe this when I saw the first news reports on Friday night. There was a minute silence at the Warfare show on Saturday, which was a nice touch from the organisers. I really despair at times like this, I don't know what the best response is to attacks like these but we need to stop them from happening. Simply bombing the region into dust isn't the answer.
I'm glad to hear that our forum members and their families are safe and my thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones.
I hope Merkel's consistently humane and sensible voice has been noted in the last year or so.
lumps. I must not type before coffee.
Now it's happening in Mali. :(
When can we all just learn to get on! :o
Very, very sadly, I fear this 'sort of thing' is going to go on for quite a while, Ronan. :(
You're right, Will !
In despair - Phil.
The Mali thing's unfolding today. Seems to be another attack on mainly the French (tourists this time).
The terrible events in Paris were all the more terrible for the same reason the Pals Battalions were during WWI; that is, in Paris it was families out together and so the deaths were multiple people from the same family and friend groups.
This sort of thing has always happened and may (although I hope not) always happen.
Its simply the product of bad ideas.
In my view this particular conflict is blighted by two particularly bad ideas - capitalism and religion.
While these bad ideas are playing out over the Middle East, we need to steel ourselves for more atrocities, from drone strikes to 'smart' bombs to suicidal murderers.
You can't kill ideas, so the only way we're going to ever stop this is through challenging and defeating the bad ideas, and educating everyone to embrace good ideas.
What are 'good ideas'? Difficult to say, but I'd suggest anything that doesn't involve harming or killing other people is heading in the right direction. The trouble is of course, that the people in power have no interest in doing anything about this. For them, war is good business, and nothing kicks up a war like religion. :(
You're right.
( I once read every xx15 year in each century was a bad year for France :-\ )

Very true......But let's not start a row over differing views about politics and religion.
Cheers - Phil
Thought this was worth posting, sums things up quite well.
And a similar one although with slightly stronger language and definitely not safe for work.
Well said Andrew Neill, not often I agree with him but he is spot on there!
I'd vote for you, Luddite.
With the Mali business being Al Quaeda it looks to me like there is now a power struggle going on between them and Isis.
Competing to see who is the most moron.
