Title: Fusilier vs Musketeers in SYW
Post by: Last Hussar on 14 November 2015, 12:48:38 AM
Other than the Mitre, what's the difference?

Also with the Prussians not sure who has what flags

Are these all musketeer standards

If you mean uniforms then that was the only big difference. This site will tell you all you need - http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Prussian_Army

The flags are all Musketeers flags - regiments 1 to 32 and 34 were musketeer, 33 and 35 plus were fusiier. Fusilier flags were similar, the above site has both.

In some rules the fusiliers are not rated as highly as musketeers. Apart from headdress musketeers and fusiliers wore very similar uniforms - obviously varied collars, cuffs etc. Look at kronoskaf.com

Sorry, I meant in battlefield terms.

What was the usual ratio of units?

I would suggest having a look at Orders of Battle on the Kronoskaf site

For example, Leuthen :

Zorndorf :

I think these illustrate the huge variety of brigade formations, with Musketeers,
Fusiliers and combined Grenadier battalions mixed together.   By reputation, the
Musketeers were meant to be higher quality than the Fusiliers and so you would
find Musketeer dominated brigades in the first line with manly Fusiliers in the
second.

I am putting together a Prussian SYW army at the moment and have organised
this as follows :

Six brigades of four battalions

Of these, four will have 3 x Musketeer + 1 x Grenadier Battalions

The fifth will represent Hanoverian allied troops (again, 3 x Musketeers
+ 1 x Grenadier Bns)

The final brigade will have 3 x Fusilier + 1 x Grenadier Bns

There is always an option then to leave them in that organisation or
bring the grenadiers together into one brigade.

I included the Hanoverians for interest (and colour variety).   I have also
included the single battalion "Grenadier-Garde" Regiment.

For cavalry, I've gone with three brigades (3 x Hussars, 3 x Cuirassiers,
3 a Dragoons).   With these, the Cuirassiers would normally be kept
together while the Dragoons and Hussars could be in mixed brigades.

Half of this project is now finished.   I will try to post some pics so that
you can see what it looks like as a whole.

The SYW figures themselves are superb, particularly the grenadiers.

I hope that helps a bit.

As Leman has said the Fusiliers are generally not considered to be as good as the Musketeers. There were in fact exceptions but as a rule of thumb I think this is true.

The Fusiliers were basically the new regiments raised by Frederick. So in the first years of his reign the number of fusilier units varied but they added up to about 1/3rd of the units overall after a short while. But generally there were two kinds of Prussian army - Frederick's army and the armies commanded by other people. Frederick's army often had no fusiliers at all and nearly always had less than 1/3rd. Maybe 10% fusiliers as an average. In contrast the other armies were usually packed with Fusiliers and with relatively few Musketeers. So they would nearly always have 1/3rd or more Fusiliers. Maybe 50% fusiliers as an average.

There was no "usual ratio". There was no difference in the way the two types fought - they were both standard line infantry at this stage. How many fusilier units were in a particular army depended on circumstance (who was in command for example, Frederick tended to get the best regiments) and the year. Quality varied from year to year as replacements for battle casualties lowered the quality of the Prussian infantry overall, and reduced the difference in quality between musketeer and fusilier regiments, if such a one existed in the first place.

Many of the the fusilier regiments were raised by Frederick in occupied territories like Silesia. The men here were not as tall, as in Prussia and Pommerania, so were were issued with a smaller musket called a fusil. To add to these mens height they were given a fusillier cap. Some fusilier regiments were of doubious loyalty to the Prussian crown whereas others like IR35 Prinz Heinrich, IR39 Jung-Braunschweig
and IR41 Wied were rated as very good regiments by Frederick himself.

Hope this is helpful.
