Title: Royal Marines (transport) post D-day
Post by: ciaphas on 01 November 2015, 12:47:30 AM
Hi, asked this on TMP the other day and may have confused the question.

What I am trying to find out is who would require transport and in what transports they would receive.  To be honest I have converted jeeps and was wonder if I had (a) made enough or (b) had I missed some?

I have made a jeep radio truck for brigade HQ, battalion HQ and a couple of OP jeeps, I also made a forward aid station by the expedient of adding a few chaps on stretchers and placing a red cross on the bonnet.

So who should get transport, I recon that mortars and Vickers would likely have transport but what? the jeep or 15cwt?

hope that is clear, I know they would walk, some had bicycles but I am looking for information when they were operating more akin to regular infantry.

Not sure on vehicles but I know the bicycles were ditched very quickly on 6 June

Mortars were carried in modified Bren carriers, heavy mortars and anti tank guns were pulled by Lloyd Carriers.
The rest, the ubiquitous Bedford truck I'm afraid until the Schildt, where you get to ride in buffaloes!

I'd be very surprised if they used jeeps that widely.

As ML says carriers and 15cwt trucks were the core of British light transport.

Airborne formations were the only ones I know of that used jeeps for everything - mainly as they were lighter for glider insertion.

No carriers in the commando war establishment. Heavy weapons troop had jeeps. More jeeps at HQ plus transport section with 15cwt and 3t.

Thanks, I assume therefore I should just look at regular infantry but exchange carriers for jeeps.  Would they (I am assuming not) receive an AT provision? If not how were they supposed to deal?

cheers

6 or 17 pounders were a divisional and corps asset...

17 pdr at divison certainly, but 6pdr was issued to Infantry Btns (from 43 only), although not commandos, which had MG's and 3" mortars, and proportionally more PIAT's.
