Title: Knights in Schloss Rodenegg frescos, North Italy, early 13th century
Post by: Druzhina on 10 October 2015, 08:37:39 AM
There are interesting frescos of knights in Iwein at Schloss Rodenegg (Rodeneck), 1215-1220, Northern Italy (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/13/Schloss_Rodenegg-murals.htm).
Iwein is a Middle High German verse romance by the poet Hartmann von Aue, written around 1203. It is Arthurian tale adapted from Chrétien de Troyes' Old French Yvain, the Knight of the Lion, it tells the story of Iwein (Ywain), a knight of King Arthur's Round Table.
There is a large image of Aschelon and Ywain fighting with lances, in flat-topped-helmets with facemasks and brigandines (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/13/Schloss_Rodenegg-Aschelon_Ywain_lances-lg.htm).

Nice one D, those are certainly colourful.
Painted helmets or paint representing bronzing?

As Aschelon and Ywain are given different coloured face masks, one or both might be painted. Ywain's could be lanten or brass and Aschelon's bronze. It doesn't seem necessary to differentiate them for identification purposes as they are labeled with their names.
