Title: Suggestions for Good PC Wargames
Post by: Orcs on 08 October 2015, 09:14:01 PM
Hi all

I am looking for ideas on Christmas presents that are not Figure related - Heresy I Know/

I Likes the Blitzkrieg Series of games and still play Allied General. Also liked Steel panthers.  Can anu of you recomend similar games that you own.  Not too worried on period. I just dont want slow complex ones, or ones that are more graphics than substance

Cheers

Orcs

I have just rediscovered "World War III - Black Gold".

Modern warfare (sort of), Yanks v Rooskies v Iraqis (!).   Good fun if you don't take it seriously.

Military stuff, pretty much any of the Total War series, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy, Close Combat: Gateway to Caen, Heroes of Normandie, Company of Heroes. The last two emphasise fun over accuracy but are none the worse for that IMHO.

For total immersion and complete life leach - EVE Online. The closest you can currently get to actually living in space if you don't have access to the International Space Station :)

If you like RPGs, get Skyrim. If you don't like RPGs get Skyrim and see if you change your mind :)

Other time-sinks I like include Master of Orion and Alpha Centauri.

Finally, the PC ports of the board games Catan, Smallworld and Ticket to Ride.

Total War series are quite good - I think the best would be Shogun 2 Total War, and both Rome and Attila Total War. Empire and Napoleon Total War are good, but you need them modded (Imperial Splendour and La Montee de l'Empire 4.0 respectively)

For grand strategy/empire building, Europa Universalis IV.

For a very immersive (my point of view) and complex WWII game, Panzer Corps (with all the theatre campaign packs). It's basically a remade classic (Panzer General) with all the previous trappings of starting out with the invasion of Poland, before fighting your war through Norway, the Low Countries, France, then either Africa or Eastern Front etc all the way until the end of the war. The difference is that while in Panzer General (the original classic) Poland was 2-3 missions, and Norway was 1 mission, Panzer Corps has about 10-20 missions just for Poland (from memory) so there's a lot of hard fighting, and you really feel like each subsequent battle relies on your previous success... or at the mercy of your previous failures. Definitely a must buy in my opinion.

For ACW, Ultimate General: Gettysburg is a hidden gem. It's a very small game, developed by the person that made all the Darthmods for Total War. Very very good in how it plays, and very intuitive. Just too bad its very short. But certainly a hidden gem.

Door Kickers: not so much a wargame as its a top-down "Rainbow Six", but also another hidden gem. Inexpensive, but very very solid.

I second the recommendation for Matrix Games and triple the recommendation for Ultimate General: Gettysburg

Matrix Games also made available for free the game 1848 on the Hungarian Revolution

I have Company of Heroes running with the freebie Eastern Front Mod which adds a couple of German factions and the Russkies. Also running on Win7 and wondering if Win10 is worth the risk.

As Ithoriel said earlier, Combat Mission. If unsure, download the demos for free from the battlefront website and if you like, 'buy' the full version(s). Here is the link for the Battle for Normandy Demo.

To see how the game(s) look, also see the following thread.

Seems to be a lot of debate, some say yes, some say no and others say the Steam basic came won't work but the two add-ons do. Mucking about with compatibility modes seems to be the key. I've just downloaded the Eastern Front mod so I'll be trying Win 10 shortly.

Let us know how it goes, SV52. I continuously get offers to upgrade to Win 10 but keep knocking it back over gears of the compatibility issue.

Good games here.  Much like playing a board game though.

The version I have is Company of Heroes Anthology (non Steam) v 2.500.0.

Loaded it up from DVD under Windows 10 and it ran perfectly first time, no intervention needed.  Only thing I've noticed that for some reason Windows Defender gets turned off.

Done nothing about patching up or installing mods yet. There's chat that 2.7 patch is only needed for Steam version but it's supposed to be necessary to run the Eastern Front mod.  One day I'll set aside the time to try this stuff, until then I'll just re-play the original game through again.

Gettysburg ultimate general is good. Even multiplayer is cool. I think the next one will be Antietam.
