Title: Hello from Surrey
Post by: MediumAL on 18 September 2015, 01:12:29 PM
Hi,
Looking to go into ww1 in East Africa, so keen to find out what others are doing in this conflict - rules, scenery, orbats etc. Knowing which figures to use for which troops would be very handy.
First real foray imto the 20th century - more of a pointy stick man really. Most figs are currently 15mm - biblical iis the biggest, but have reasonable collections in a number of other periods. Fair number of 28mm - TYW, Darkest Africa, odds and sods of other things. Dabbled in most things over the 40 years or so I've been splodging paint on figures.

Keen on modelling, more so than gaming to be honest, so interested in trying to turn out something in a new scale. Any gaming generally with the SAS club in Horsham. Not that SAS - although if you could win battles by eating pies we would be a force to be feared! Speedy painting tips would be handy, as I'm getting on a bit!

Wotcha and welcome from the county to your right (looking at a map).

Block colours then a dark brown Magic Wash will get the little chaps on the table 'toot- suite' if you are in a hurry.

Welcome. WWI East Africa is a fascinating period, but not one I've gamed. However, the Too Fat Lardies' If The Lord Spares Us, written for WWI Middle East are easily adaptable to East Africa. In fact I use them for Belgium 1914, and some NZ gamers on this forum use them for the retreat from Mons.

Hi MediumAL,

nice to see another person introduce themselves on this friendly, helpful and knowledgeable forum.

Despite appearances to the contrary we are not complete lunatics ... several of us are still missing bits :)

MediumAL .... any relation to Wee-but-no'-as-wee-as-Wee-Hamish-Hamish? ;)

Thanks for the welcome folks.

I'll take a look at the Too Fat Lardies set, and maybe Peter Pig's Square Bashing. Given the size of many of the actions, I'll be looking for something that copes with that. Maybe I'll vary the ruleset and the figure ratio depending on the size of the encounter. I have Contemptible Little Armies, but never used it, so I'll give that a read as well.

Hello and Welcome MediumAl

There's two sets of rules on the Free Wargame Wiki for WW1 East Africa:-

http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/East_Africa_WWI (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/East_Africa_WWI)

http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/I_Wish_I_Was_In_France (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/I_Wish_I_Was_In_France) (Inspired by the Pendraken range  :) )

If you want to try your hand at modelling there's also http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Mimi_and_Toutou_Go_Forth (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Mimi_and_Toutou_Go_Forth) which is naval battles on Lake Tanganyika  :)

As my Scot wife would say, it's hard to go past free  ;D.

Also there is the adaptation of Chris Peers Heart of Africa called Heart of East Africa http://www.edinburghwargames.com/Heart%20of%20Africa/Heart%20of%20East%20Africa/In%20the%20Heart%20of%20East%20Africa%20Playsheet.doc (http://www.edinburghwargames.com/Heart%20of%20Africa/Heart%20of%20East%20Africa/In%20the%20Heart%20of%20East%20Africa%20Playsheet.doc) Chris Peers also wrote the Contemptible Little Armies.

Cheers, let us know how you get on.

I must apologise for my fellow members. Some of them are a bit ... well a bit ... you know.

Please be assured that some members, I hate to be seen to promote myself, but it has to be said, people like me, are here as dedicated modellers, gamers and collectors. As I was saying to Lord Hallux* last night ... I'm sorry you may not know his lordship. He's a close friend of mine, a right stand up fellow, socking good chap in fact ... that this forum sometimes descends into farce. His Lordship thought I said "farsi", but I shooed away that notion. Anyway he nailed it straight away when he said, in his clipped tones,  that I was probably right, and I say that he is too.

*OK. I paint a face on my big toe, and give it a name.

I thought Square Bashing was aimed at Divisional level games with Battalions as units, seems a bit to high level for East Africa. Or is there a lower level version?

To me Square bashing implies infantry and Lake Tanga makes me think water is involved. Is it a snorkeling scenario?

It's a British attempt to seize a port in German hands. It was defeated quite comprehensively so the scenario is to see if the British force can do any better. Strangely  Tanga a seaport and there is no further mention of a lake. There is no lake on the gaming table, so how the scenario got it's name I am not sure. The British table edge is the Indian Ocean coastline.

Hmmm ... I've done some research and there may be a trend.

Lake Manga, 1811 - No animated characters, no even in Japan.
Lake Tanga-Brief, 1942 - No mention of ladies unmentionable.
Lake Hanga, 1782 - Although a monkey was involved, it was nowhere near Hartlepool.
Lake Banga, 1983 - Not fought with obsolete, out of date equipment.
Lake Kanga, 1904 - Surprisingly, not part of the Great 'roo Bush War.
Lake Sangar, 1979 - Fought on the open, with no-one in prepared stone positions.

Thanks for the welcome - I think?!?!
Thought about the Fringe bit, but mine has been retreating towards the back of my head for years now. Only consolation is that the light bouncing from my gleaming pate can sometime help when photographing minis. No Medium Betty, I fear. Knew a Sweaty Betty once, but never worked out how she got the name - she was lovely.

Waiting for my new toys to be delivered, so nothing useful to contribute yet. Bore you all with some pics in time.

Just as a side thought, and nothing to do with Techno and his MiL and their living arrangements, at what point does an "older woman" stop being sexy and start being a bit ... strange.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my dear Rikki Nobby.

For example, some look at an "old lady"  ..... like the Centurion, say ..... and after one look at her guns, only see Nirvana.   8->

I think that as you age yourself your subconscious   mentally increases the age that you find women are sexy. You also appreciate the experience of the older woman.

Thanks, Gents.

Got the good lady home late last night, in the end.....After what was basically a very comprehensive 'full body' M.O.T.
It appears that the pill she takes to 'top up' her thyroid needs halving.....And that's why her heart was playing silly b's and throwing in extra beats all over the place.

The 'thyroid pills' were what we both hoped were causing the problem......But it was a tad worrying.

Cheers - Phil

Hope the Mrs gets better. Sometimes it's as tough for the other half. I've had medical probs the last few years and although she's hidden it well, it's been tough on my wife.
I obviously don't learn. Keep thinking I should cut back on the collections, but I've started yet another with the 10mm. Going to sell some bits off at Selwg on Sunday, but if there's any suitable 10mm stuff there, I'll end up spending the takings -assuming there are any.
Anyone exhibiting or trading up there this weekend?
