Title: Warping
Post by: Fenton on 13 September 2015, 12:11:18 PM
Just noticed that some of the 100x50 bases l did for Warband have started to warp. I used PVA like I always do. Anyone have any ideas of how to fix this or a better basing method so this won't happen?

Cheers

did you seal both sides of the bases to prevent dampness getting to the material?

Something that large in mdf will be prone to warping. The best bet is to try and paint the underside of the base. Basically if a sheet material has odd numbers of layers, it tends not to warp; even it does (think bi-metallic strips). So adding paint to the base should make it an odd number of layers. Hope this makes sense?

Would 3-4mm depth mdf prevent the warping?

Would gluing a mini lolly stick along the base work as additional support - I mean from the point of view of still being able to get your figures on in the way that you want.

Not in my experience. That's why I use styrene or ABS sheet, and that has a 'natural' curve to it due to the way it is made/stored. I simply put the curve along the short edge of the base, so the long edge stays straight. So far I've not had problems.....

Pleased to say that scoring the bases and adding PVA has done the trick. Thanks for all the advice

So, nothing about faster than light travel then?

That's disappointing.

No, but I believe you. It's just counter intuitive. Isn't it?  :(

It does amaze me the theoretical knowledge and real world expertise this forum coughs up. I bet if I asked questions about u-bends and sun spots and Victoria Pendleton, I'd get as good a set of answers as if I ask about Frederick the Great's hair powder or the muzzle velocity of a T34/85.

Just happy to be a part of it.

All plywoods is made up from an odd number of layers for this very reason. If you then veneer one side, making it an even number, it will warp, hence having a cheap balancing veneer for the back.
