I don't know if its post night shift ramblings but I wondered what level of interest there might be amongst forum members for running a virtual campaign through the forum?
I read with interest Warlord Games (sorry for swearing) recent Summer Offensive campaign. Played using Bolt Action players registered as either Axis or Allies and then played games amongst friends feeding the results into the campaign master, added a sprinkling of batreps and eventually came up with a result over a period of weeks.
The campaign master drew up the narrative and collated results etc.
Is this something people might be interested in from this forum?
I'm not suggesting Bolt Action as the 'go to' rules but we could potentially set up something based on a specific period or maybe even Warband?
If we went WW2 for example which rules players played wouldn't necessarily be the issue as only the result influences the campaign outcome.
I'm happy to take up the reins of organising something if their appears to be some interest.
Let me know ;)
I'm in,
Warband yes
WWII maybe
WwI early or very late yes.
1870/1866 definitely
AWI or ACW a possibility
Or anything else interesting people come up with!
If you will allow solo players then I'm in as well. I have armies in most periods so that's not a problem either. Just let me know what period and I'll see what I've got.
I remember GW doing this years ago using Warhammer and I think they did it with 40k too. They published it in White Dwarf and was a decent read.
I took part in the GW Storm of Chaos campaign, organised on similar lines. They restricted it to games of Warhammer or Warmaster, naturally, and included special events that introduced the odd random event/ special rule into the standard rules of play.
The metagame became almost as much fun as the tabletop action. I remember GW deciding to encourage "fan fiction" by allowing the propaganda war to influence results.
I'm in the middle of moving my stuff from a country to another, but if it's WWII eastern front, I'm in.

From Germany to Russia perhaps, so that you can get the 'real feel for the period'.
I don't know, the lengths people will go to for their hobby. :)
Count me in.
I can cover almost any period/genre, and most sets of rules.
Good to see some interest in this ;)
I would certainly like this to be geared up to include solo players and the idea of player generated 'propoganda' influencing the narrative and results of games certainly adds some appeal :)
My very early thinking is as follows:
Determine a 'Conflict' suitable for a campaign
I don't want to rule anything out at this stage but think playing a whole conflict as opposed to one specific theater would probably allow participants more freedom of choice depending on what collections they have.
I.E if we went with WW2 it wouldn't matter what theatre your collection was or what nationality as the results of all games played in the campaign would determine the result at the end.
Rules to be used
Players would be free to use any rule set they own to play their games. Skirmish up to mass battle. Whatever floats your boat
Players would choose a side at the beginning of the campaign
and would stick with that side throughout. Solo players can still do this, naturally they would play both sides!
League system
The results of games would score points. 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Propoganda can influence the result clearly I need to think through what this might look like
Players can dip in and out of the tournament
No need to play boatloads of games. Players can contribute as much or as little as they like
I hope to get some sponsorship/potential prizes
for participants to win. Best battle report. Most active contributor to the campaign - that sort of thing
I hope to get a seperate board on this forum
where we can post propoganda, battle reports, banter and bragging rights :D
I will give this some more thought over the weekend and hopefully set up a poll to gain some idea of what conflicts might suit this idea.
Please keep the ideas coming ;)
If solo is possible, i would be able to dip in at times with WWII and ACW. (if acw would allow other rulesets instead of black powder)
For propaganda, You could work out an advantage gained from the population of the area the armies are fighting over.
For example, have random events that present you with a choice to help the people of the lands you are fighting over, or help yourself and have that influence the amount of 'native' assistance you get.
These could be all sort of things, spending some of your supplies to give emergency aid to the people in the area, and in reward getting a 'local guide' that can negate a terrain penalty. Maybe you pass some farmland and get the choice of looting the latest harvest to up your supplies, or paying for it and gain a good reputation among the population you are 'freeing' (just rule that you get more supplies if you loot, that way both options have something to offer)
All these acts could go towards a 'popularity balance' swinging back and forth while armies behave or act like conquering swines. Make this balance have benefits for both parties, for example sabotage by local partisans if they favour you, or leading you in ambushes when they collaborate with your enemy.
It is a nice idea indeed!
This is sounding interesting. Let the idea not die for lack of follow-up.
Ideas not dead. Im away from home studying and hope to look at this again when im back home.
Trust me, i need all the distractions i can get after studying ECG'S for the week..... :-)
Nosher,
I'm certainly interested, would be able to help with WWII. I've either got forces or decent proxies for pretty much every theater, and I seem to get in a good number of solo games ;)
With enough warning, I could even ensure I've got 'proper' forces for whichever theater, maybe even some air, naval, and/or coastal gaming as well?
V/R,
Jack
