Title: Slight change in plans
Post by: pierre the shy on 23 May 2015, 04:15:07 AM
I made a few decisions on what I want to do gaming wise....I was going to limit myself to just getting some more 10mm 1914 stuff and paint up the remaining 1/3000 and 1/4800 ships that I have to do once I get back from the UK.....got a few interesting scenarios in mind that I can throw at the local GQ naval players  ;D

However as you will all be aware plans are great till reality shows up  :o

Last night I got a phone call from my late friend's brother to tell me that Rob has left me all his gaming stuff in his will - can I come round today and pick it up please.

Well blow me...Rob had never said anything about this to me when I'd seen him recently.

Thought he'd sold a fair bit of his stuff but still got a whole lot left....3 15mm DBM armies, a 28mm Viking DBM army, DBMM rules, FOG rules, 3 cartons of books and PC games and more Flames of War stuff than you can shake a stick at - mainly late war Americans - as well as every FOW book ever produced by the look of it.

I'm very moved by his thoughtfulness - it will all be put to good use, but my gaming plans will have to change a fair bit.

I've tried FOW once, but it was not really for me......now I had contemplated 10mm Chain of Command for a while but gave that thought away as one project I'd never get done, but with a whole lot of very nicely painted FOW stuff it might just be back on the agenda...with a bit of rebasing and purhaps some 15mm opposition to be acquired later in the year  8)

I've lost my father and one of my best freinds so far this year and will never forget them, but I'll put their legacies to me to the best possible use that I can.

Cheers
Peter

What a lovely thing to be left as as a memento of someone close.  I have my fathers medals (died many years ago) and I doubt there is anything else personal enough to him that would value so  much - I think wargame armies hold much the same value.

On my death, my son (non-wargamer) will look at all my wargame stuff and say 'thanks a bunch dad - what the hell to I do with these now'? :-)  e-bay would probably beckon, so perhaps it is simply better in the first place to make sure these sort of things end up in the hands of people who will value them.

Hear, hear !

One of my most precious possessions is the carved 'shield' of Swansea University's 'logo', that my dear old Dad chiseled out of a piece of wood in his 'youth'.
I shouldn't think it's of any value at all, but to me it's priceless.

Cheers - Phil

I have all my Dads stuff from when he was in bomb disposal in WW2.   including an electric fuse and a 1kg incendry bomb.  The bombs been deactivated but is basically just a huge lump of magnesium, that could burn through 6 inches of concrete  :-\ :-\

The most interesting bit are two excercise books with all his hand written training notes and diagrams,  Its not worth anything much, but like your shield Phil , to me its priceless.

Such a lovely momento :). I'm sure each time you use the stuff you will think of your friend.

I'm not sure what will happen to my stuff when I pop my clogs, but I reckon ebay the most likely route. I may leave a load to my friends to be disposed of for charity etc, but hopefully won't have to think of this for a good few years yet!

Sorry for the loss of a friend.
Keeping his armies in use is a great thing to do.

Fortunately, he was turned down for The Manhattan Project.   :)

Opposition shouldn't be a problem ;) I have some FOW late war Germans, British and mid war Free French :-[

Left overs from diverting my son from GW and teaching him some family history. The British are my father's battalion, 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire on June 6, 1944.

I believe some people play CoC with multi based figures, must do some digging on how

I'm definitely looking forward to remembering Rob as we make good use of his bequest

I agree entirely with that last bit Paul  8)

Let the games begin......when I get back.

Reclaimed a whole lot of space in our spare room today with a trip to Earthlink.....couldn't believe the amount of stuff we had hoarded away in there, including three boxes of PC wargames (a couple on 5.25" floppy discs....try loading those on a Windows 7 based PC !)  :-[
