Title: Civilian motor vehicles
Post by: Sunray on 21 August 2010, 05:58:30 PM
One of the features of modern (1940s onwards)conflict - from Indo China to the bush wars of the Third World,  is the presence of civilian traffic on the roads that are in the warzone.
In military terms, they can hinder militiary mobility,  are often used as road blocks, or even on occasions, commandeered as transport.   The 1970s saw the invention of the 'car bomb' as a serious militiary weapon in its own right.
Does anyone know of a source for cheap 10mm/ 'N' Gauge civilian vehicles ?   I will settle for the usual suspects -  a Merc for high status, a mid range salon
and  something like small VW, plus mini bus and coach ?

Thanks Nik, as I was saying, I had noted the Wiking range - worth looking at. Its not as rich in price as say the Oxford range which are really collectors pieces, but still relatively expensive.  Shows why a lot of the N Gauge mob are using 10mm 'wargame' vehicles in their layouts- and the good value for money that we get !  I suppose I was looking for late 20th century vehicles 1970s-80s era.

Has anyone sourced the Japanese N gauge vehicles ?  Perhaps we should add a few civvie vehicles to our requests ?

Hi Sunray your post got me searching
I came across this site that has N gauge tractors etc, always useful for foreign areas

Many thanks - reference noted .  If you are keen on boats, I discovered a wee Dutch website , www.artitec.nl   - they do really impressive 'goods depots'
the sort you can convert into barracks etc, but the also have a neat range of boats and decent sized ships....like car ferries ...very useful in an island scanario.   They are big into the railway hobby themselves and very decent lads to trade with.

Thanks again.

Nay bother! Oh, and Revell do the 'North Sea Trawler' injection plastic in a 'fit the box'  somewhere around 1/142 scale -

My thanks to Nikharwood and Maenoferren who took the trouble to source and find links.   Much appreciate your contribution to the thread,

One cheap source I did find was in ......Somerset -  Oh Arrrrr.......Wellington Models ...www.wellingtonmodels.com

Pacts of KATO salon cars start at £5.99 for six models - yes six!! - (Toyota Crowns in different colours) and there is a modest list of bus and pick up trucks at similar price range.

At this price one can afford a few burnt out road blocks !

Challange;can a cheaper/wider range  source be found ?

No Worries  :D

I found a nice ship I liked, but then saw the price 192 euros ouch, also found a nice cricket pavillion which would be ideal for the African residence of somebody or other.... this was still a bit steep at £20...looks like sctatchbuilding may occur :o

At 192Euros, this must be some size of a fishing skiff !  I have scratch built ships for my model railway mates. Lots of plans, accessories and plastic injection hulls out here from 1/200 to 1/144.  What had you in mind? (sorry guys, the 'closet ship modellers' have just hijacked the thread!)

And can you please share the link for your nice cricket pavillion ?

yep some of these buildings are nice indeed.
However the price is quite high I found a bungalow that would also do for Africa/India  :D

Sunray I am after a tramp steamer circa 1936 - hence the 190+ euros. To be honest A scratch built one would surfice as it wouldnt see regular use in a game. In one of our role play games the whole evening's gaming took place on a tramp steamer, basically because I had forgotten the stuff I needed. oh what a laugh we had, basically poisonous snakes and bombs, somehow they all managed to kill the snakes and disarm the bombs, well apart from Luigi Speligrino, a confidence trickster, who had managed to get on the mission to find loot. He spent most of the game sat in a lifeboat, with the ship's supply of tinned good and all the lifejackets :D

Hi,

For the non-railway modeller:

N Scale is usual in Europe and N.America and is scaled at 1:160
N Gauge is the British standard and is scaled at 1:148

so you may need to beware that there may well be size differences between British sourced stuff and overseas. The cricket pavillion from Langley already mentioned will be (almost certainly) 1:148.

For civvy vehicles, and other scenic accessories, you could try Gem (http://www.gemmodelrailways.co.uk/GEM_Web_Site/N_Gauge_Accessories.html). These will all be designed for 1:148 (although how accurate there are .... ).

Cheers, Martyn

Also, Just remembered Oxford Diecast, available from Hattons (http://www.ehattons.com/stocklist/MfrNest.aspx?ManID=119). Pre-painted at these prices, can't go wrong.

Cheers, Martyn

Raider 4

the GEM link...this is outstanding ! best range I have seen and at affordable prices !  Many Thanks.

Maenoferran,  are you aware of the Pendraken Flower Class corvette ? The vessel was designed as a whaler, so might lend itself well to a 1920s tramp steamer-
the bridge detail is so right- fits a Clyde type steamer to a tee. ie remove front gun deck, add a cargo hold and a couple of gib masts.

Does anyone have any photos of the flowe class corvette?

Ummm....I have just converted my last kit to a 1970s era corvette - new bridge, gun, radar masts and seacat SAM.....But the resin kit is based the same type as the Revell 1/76 model.....which used to be Matchbox (?)   If you google 'Flower Class Corvette ' you should have a wealth of images
There should be a wikipedia entry.   I hope this is useful.

Yep! Its a bonny wee ship.  The resin can be sawed, so the forward 'A' gun deck could be removed, a square hold casing added, and similar cut made aft
and a couple of gib masts added. ...and you have your classic inter war years tramp steamer.  You could scratch build an enclosed bridge if desired.

Leon tells me that he has a couple of MTB types in the Pendraken shipyard as we speak.....

Pendraker need more images of models - you don't appreciate the quality from a list!

Title: Re: Civilian motor vehicles

it looks like the superstructure comes separately to help with removal of turret A?
Title: Re: Civilian motor vehicles
Post by: Sunray on 25 August 2010, 09:47:05 AM
yes, the superstructure and bridge come in three castings- the 'A' gun mounting is 5mm higher than the deck, so a careful cut with a hacksaw and a little sandpaper will (a) remove it or (b) shape it for a forward cargo hold.

Has anyone else 'converted' the Corvette ? My last build converted her to 1970s look with ...4.5 gun, new bridge and SAM launcher. but the notion of a tramp steamer is enticing.

Ummm ...we are a long way from civilian motor vehicles! (sorry guys)

Check out the Vietnam patrol boat. Its a very neat casting with open decks, so could be converted into civvie speed boat/ pleasure craft.
If your scanario needs a speed boat ?

Yeah, there's a couple on the side, but they need someone to have a good look at them and clean them up a bit first.

Yes, a useful piece of kit.  At 10mm scale, you can put a corvette on the table, and still have a decent 'land based' game.  I have pestered Leon for some other navel units of this size and class.    Units that can support amphip ops.   But that is another thread...
