Title: Nomads
Post by: AndyT on 11 May 2015, 04:07:58 PM
I've been on my hols and whilst sitting on my balcony, reading William Napier's "Atilla" trilogy my thoughts turned to what a nomadic (mostly horse archer) army might consist of in Warband.

Not got as far as any stats or spells yet. Just a few thoughts about unit types:

* Chieftain and Shaman of course.

* Core units: Horse archers perhaps with 'skirmish' and 'parting shot', mounted lancers, and unwilling levy infantry

* Optional units: Guard lancers, Chosen men (better than average horse archers), mounted berserkers (something like the sword armed Mongolian elite unit in the film "Mongol") and perhaps vultures as flyers

Does this have any potential, is it not "fantasy" enough or are there too few unit choices?

Cheers, Andy

A good start Andy.

How about this?

Commander unit (1)
Chieftain

Magic user unit (0-1)
Shaman

Core units (200pts+)
Horse archers
Warrior cavalry

Optional units (0-200pts)
Air elementals
Centaur archers
Centaur warriors
Giant eagles
Mammoths
Pegasi
Unicorns
Wyrms

I like the 'mounted berserkers idea too!

Its the bit starting at 2:14 you're refrring to eh?

I'd been thinking a bit about a Mongol styled fantasy army

My fantastical additions would be
Eagles
Gollums (trolls or ogres)
Giant Sand Worms

These are based off a WM list that someone put together, with some reference to Mongol mythology.

Yeah that's the film. Love it! Not sure how well the horse would be controlled if they are waving two swords around though?!

I'd like to see the bulk of the army as horse archers. Not sure how well it would work if they all had skirmish and parting shot but they would be unarmoured so quite vulnerable. It would need some playtesting I guess and, sadly, I am still to have my first proper game if Warband. Soon though, hopefully...

Well the 'Wyrms' unit fits nicely - there is mention of legendary giant worms in the second Atilla book. Also eagles and vultures.

Quite a lot of focus on the shamans "chanting in support of warriors" so they are not just healers or defensive magic users.

I'm less sure about including Centaurs, Unicorns and Pegasus with the Mongols - they feel too Ancient Greek for me.

Don't forget wolves, they feature quite strongly in Mongol myths and legends. I don't know if the rules allow for attack camels and bolshy reindeer but they are another option.

The worms and wolf packs would fit nicely into a Warmaster-themed Hobgoblin army.
