I'm working on a army list for Vikings based on Warmaster Ancients Vikings. Not a large selection of special troops and no cavalry. Lack of choices may turn off many.
I have:
Warlord (general)
Bondi (warriors)
Archers
Hirdmen (veterans)
Skirmishes
Berserker
Options for shieldwall, fierce, and powerful (great axes). Stats based on Barbarians & some Dragon Men .
Thoughts?
Ulfhadnar?
Jomsvikings?
Raiders?
Perhaps they need the option of having some light cavalry as scouts? Otherwise you seem to have it covered.
Ulfhandnar would be similar to berserkers so any need for an extra troop type?
Jomsvikings are 'legendary' so if used would need something like 'Resolute' to make them hang around longer?

Would those really be different enough to give a different block of stats & a new unit type? Thats the question. Historical armies wont have magic and will probably have less special choices. It would be neat to have Vikings vs. Elves or Romans vs. Orcs though.
Im not a historian, but Id like Historical lists to be based in historical fact. Did Vikings use cavalry in war, or catapults, etc? If not, Id be against it being added because they "need" it.
historical vikings ride, but they use the horses to get to the battefield, dismount and fight by foot.
Vikings do not use cavalry as units or formation.

Thanks, I thought as much. A Riders of Rohan type army would be cool though. :)
But Vikings did use horses/ light cavalry to scout ahead.

If they didnt actually fight from horseback, it probably shouldnt be a troop type.
Its just some ideas. The Vikings had some pretty straight forward tactics & limited troop types. Other historical armies, like Rome & Carthage would have more.
wouldn't it be possble to add some Viking mythology to an army going up against elves, eg Valkyrie flyers.
...and Frost giants, Warriors of Valhalla, Trolls? All would be great for a Fantasy/Mythical Viking army.
And spam monsters.
Warband 'fantasy' and Warband 'historical' will allow a lot of crossing over of units. Using a Viking Army of 8+ bases for example in Warband historical would also create the major core of a Viking Warband fantasy army, perhaps only needing to substitute 2 - 4 bases (or indeed just add on those bases giving a larger army).
Crossing over? Is this why Vikings wore eye make-up and braided their hair?

I wish to complain about this Viking you sold me ..... what's wrong with it? .... I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad! .... it is no more! .... it has gone to Valhalla! .... it is off to ride with the Valkyries! .... Standing up? STANDING UP!!! .... of course it's standing up you've glued it to this base! ..... No, it is NOT tired! .... no it's not "leaning" against it's mate because it was "up late last night rapin' an' pillagin'"!!! .... moved? It only moved because you rolled for extra CP ... it is no more .... it is an ex-Viking ... IT'S DEAD!!!
Grendel's a troll, actually.

Really? The sources seem to refer to him either as a 'giant', or simply as a 'monster'.
He's also from the Anglo-Saxon tradition, rather than Viking/Scandanavian tradition.

I would enjoy painting and playing with that army, especially as I have a whole bag of pendraken Vikings to start on.
Beowulf goes into his parentage etc. He's humanoid, tough-skinned, and descended from Cain.

That's the later Christian addition to the older traditional story though eh? The earlier translations are much less clear about the nature of grendle and he way have been a rival 'hero', as much as a 'monster'. There are interpreations that he may have been a two-legged dragon (perhaps a transitional aspect between the tryptich of enemies in the story - the dragon, Grendel's mother (seemingly fairly normal) and Grendel himself as some sort of 'half-dragon'), a 'vampire-like' creature, etc.
A fascinating character none-the-less and he'd make a great figure for a fantasy army. :)
Quite liked the Thirteenth Warrior take on it! :)
If someone else wants to throw together a different historical army list, feel free. Lots out there.
A Lindisfarne Monks army list seems like a bit of a non-starter - but hold on, what about a fantasy Lindisfarne Monks list - St.Michael and a host of warrior Angels, Jesus as a hero turning blood into wine and flesh into bread. Might be a bit all-conquering really- 0h well, back to the drawing board.
Warrior monks though...oooh...interesting.
Joe Dever's Magnamund armies spring to mind. The Kai Lords, Summerlund, the Giaks, etc. GW/Citadel used to do the models for this, and as i understnd a new RPG is soon to be released.
