Title: Early 16th century Persian arquebusiers
Post by: Druzhina on 09 April 2015, 03:14:40 AM
There is a 16th century Persian arquebusier in Farud and Tukhvara view the Iranians from a mountain top (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Shahnama/1522-Farud_and_Tukhvara_view_the_Iranians_from_a_mountain_top-f229v-large.htm) from the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp I of Persia (or Houghton Shah-nameh), c. 1522-1540 (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Shahnama/1522-Shahnama_of_Tahmasp.htm)
It is the only contemporary illustration of an early 16th century Persian arquebusier or musketeer I have come across. His red hat (turban?) is similar to a cavalryman's in the same miniature but does not appear in other available miniatures from this shahnama.

Does anyone have a contemporary illustration of early 16th century Persian arquebusiers or musketeers?

Hi Druzhina

That's a tough one. Plenty of arquebusiers/musketeers from the later period.

Only one that could possible be helpful is this hunting scene 1556-65 with the figure in green and yellow, lower right that could be holding a musket:-

GrumpyOldMan,

It probably is. I had a look through the manuscript and found:
A musket in a hunting scene in Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones) by Jami (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Haft_Awrang.htm)
A musket in 'Bandits attack the caravan of Aynie and Ria' in Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones) by Jami (http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Haft_Awrang-64v.htm)
