I am a new player to Warbands, but have played a lot of Warhammer, 40K and some Epic & Warmaster. Im excited about Warbands. My army for Warhammer has primarily been Dwarves, with some occasional Skaven...er...I mean Ratmen. So Im going to start with Dwarves. I will possibly try a Ratman army using my home made rules or just use the Goblin & Orc list.
Shopping List:
The Dwarf Starter Army is a good start. (Ha! ;) )
A General/command, Wizard, 3 Warriors, 1 Shooter, 1 Artillery, 1 Noble Riders. 8 sturdy units. Im planning to pick up the old Dwarf High King on Throne, to make my General stand out. Also a few extra command packs, to give some of my units a leader type. I definitely want Berserkers and a unit of Honour Guard. I will also need another unit of Shooters to make my Core requirement. I like my Dwarves with guns- so I'll pick up a pack of Dwarf w/gun. To make my Honor Guard, I'll pick up a pack of Dwarf w/hammers. These will be King Guard/Hammerers. Of course I need the Warband book. I like a dead-tree version better. I have a pdf, but nothing beats a real book. I want my Dwarves tough as stone, so most will have shieldwall and formed. Dwarf Wizards & Noble Riders will stay in the box for now.
- Warband book
- Dwarf Starter Army
- Shooters FAN HDW2
- Berserkers FAN HDW6
- Command FAN HDW4
- High King FD9
- Dwarf w/ hammer FHD3
- Dwarf with handgun FHD8
Army List:
Being a former Warhammer player, Im not a fan of Dwarf cavalry or spell casters. So I'll do without them for now.
General
Just the basic General with shieldwall.
Magic-user
Skipping this for now.
Core
2 Archer units with shieldwall
3 Warrior units with shieldwall.
That makes my 200+ Core requirement.
Optional
Artillery
Berserkers
Honour Guard
This puts me at just over 500, I think 503, and 9 solid units. If my opponents list goes over, I can always add a Hero to one of my units or resolute to make up a difference, or upgrade my General.
Im also planning to get some dice frames with blue dice. My old Dwarf army was a half blue/ half white paint scheme, so I think I will use that in their honour. The blue dice should work nicely.
An Interesting army selection Bloodaxe. I have played Warband a couple of times and have found that Magic Users can be very useful so I would at least order some Magician figures so that you can add a unit when you like. However I do like your idea of an all infantry Dwarf army, just seems right somehow! Be sure to post up pictures of anything you paint.
With you on dwarf cavalry Bloodaxe.
If it helps you get your head around a dwarf magic user, you could always refer to him as a "not rune priest."
I may change my mind about the Wizard...uhm....Rune Priest. Its only a basic list right now. In Warhammer, Dwarves could not cast spells, but had a high magic defense. So Im just used to no magic & no cavalry.
Dwarf "magic' to me is shooting & artillery! Bang! Boom! The enemy disappears! (except for bloody chunks)
Actual game play may change my mind. ;)
I'd go with Bodvoc and order some magic users with your the rest, you can then paint em up and have them on "standby." ;)
Whom, apart the EvilEmpire's idea, was it that Dwarves cannot have magic users?
Who says female deep gnomes can't be Druids! (2nd Edition AD&Dreference there)!

I'm ordering the Dwarf Army pack so I will have some Dwarf Wizards available. I'll paint them up but keep them on standby. 500 points isn't enough for everything I want!

You have the same disease I do ; ooh, I might need them and them and them and......
Neber know when to stop. =)
Ahh...the tyranny of GW! ;D
You can win without magic users, but they certainly give you and edge. And I think, well, the spell caster unit is an opportunity to really go to town on the modelling!
:D

Hardly a glowing recommendation; have you seen my posts! :D
Im looking forward to making the units interesting. You can do that with Warbands/Pendraken since they have individual figures and not strips of troops elbow to elbow. My General I want a Throne of Power, easy to do with the dwarf High King on his throne. For my Dwarf Wizards/Runesmiths- I want an Anvil of Doom. A GW dwarf banner anvil bit and a few Pendraken Dwarf Wizards and Guards. My Honor Guard i want Hammer Dwarfs and a few elite types with command. Shooters- I like dwarves with guns! Handgunners mostly, maybe a flamethrower team for Powerful/Slow shot.
Im also thinking a "Hero" icon to add to any units I decide to upgrade with a Hero. That way I can move it around from game to game. Perhaps an empty slot on the base, like the dice frame.
Hmmm dwarf cavalry - nope like having a haddock Tour D'France team.
I have a few ideas for scenic bases already.
General- Dwarf High King on Throne of Power with guards & banners
Wizard/Runesmith- Anvil of Doom with Runesmith & guards
Hero icon- maybe a champion with shieldbearers
Berserkers Id like a dead Giant or Trolls, Orcs on the base. Maybe I can get a figure and file the front flat so it lays on the ground, dead
For RESOLUTE troops I can have a champion standing on an oathstone
For SHIELDWALL- more figures in front rank with shields
Archers/Shooters with POWERFUL & SLOW SHOT- have some flame thrower teams
That's going to be a fine looking warband there Bloodaxe. Can't wait to see it!
Here's my take on 'shieldwall' so far: http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/warband-red-mountain-hill-dwarves.html (http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/warband-red-mountain-hill-dwarves.html)

I saw & admired that before. Great stuff! Do you know which code those shield Dwarves are? Thats what i need, some sturdy dwarves with big shields. Those bannermen are great too.
Sorry Bloodaxe, i'm not sure. I actually think they might even be from the Gnomes range (FGN2)?? Not sure - i bought them a few years ago. :(

Argghhhhh!!! Hard to find some figures with little to no pics on the site. Shame. Ok, thanks though. I appreciate it. Im sure i can come up with something.
They're not from the Dwarf range as far as I can tell, you might be right that they're from the Gnomes, Lud. I'll have a look at work tomorrow and confirm what they are.

That waould be very nice of you. i just need a few Dwarfy types with nice shields. Thanks!
Made my first official purchase. Its in the mail, I havent recieved it yet. GW Warmaster Dwarf Throne of Power/Anvil of Doom set. From what I understand, this is a rare pack. Im going to use these as my General & Wizard. If the scale is close to Pendraken Hill Dwarf I will put a afew guards on the bases too. If not, I may just use what comes on the base or use a few other Warmaster Dwarfs as guards.
I'll post a pic when I get it. I may start a whole new thread.
Dwarf cavalry? INCONCEIVABLE! That I would go to war without Rune Knights on Bears and Orcopolen light goat cavalry. Never leave home without them.

Ah, the Orcopolen Light Goat Cavalry regiment of the Welsh Dwarves Division. :D
More "Lithuani-Dwarf Runic Order" 1st Mounted BBQ section but I'm sure those Welsh goblins would like a piece of the steak ;)

Yeah, but the Pendrakan Dwarf cavalry have ponies ....or is that a furry dog? :)
I could see a mean boar, like in The Hobbit movie.
Look like mutts to me. ;)

This would be cool though...

Or of course, bears...
:D
I could add some more, if I fancy but my dwarves on bears and goats (or legacy breed sheep, could be either!) are "from another place" (TM) ;)

Looks like animal cruelty.
I wonder if Dwarf Noble riders would fit on Orc warboars. Dwarves need a manly mount. ;)
A goat or ram would be cool too.

I'm pretty sure they are Gnomes
I revived my Warmaster blister today. Dwarf Throne of Power (General) with 6 guards/throne bearers, Anvil of Doom with Runesmith on top (Spell-crafter) along with 2 guards, Bugman (?) with a mug/stein. A chained pet bear with trainer or jester(?) not sure on the last fig. They will make a unique & easily identifiable General & spell-crafter for sure.
I have not heard back from Great hall games after several emails and a week, So I'll be moving on. They lost a $100+ order easily. They replied initially then nothing, even after I sent 4 more messages. Shame.
The War Store does not have warbands as of yet, but they have some older fantasy stuff from Pendraken.
I may just bite the bullet and order direct from Pendraken. I was hoping to avoid the shipping (Im from USA) , but I dont want to wait on these other shops forever.
Something like this: (mine are new/unpainted)

Do you get a Warmaster blister from too much frenetic Warmastering?
Order straight from Pendraken! With every order you get a free whiff of Middle-Borough air!
Ordered my Warbands rulebook, along with dice/fames, counters/tokens, bases.
Hill Dwarf starter army set ( command, wizard, riders, shooters, artillery, 3 warriors)
3 command
1 shooters
2 berserkers
1 artillery
1 gyrocopter
1 earth elementals
Also some extra hammers, handguns, command, and flame throwers to beef up units. Along with my WM throne & anvil, i think im set. I may add extra warrior units later if needed.
Looking forward to seeing this progress, Bloodaxe ! :)
Cheers - Phil

Ha!
I guess I should say blister pack? Maybe not.....
You see the @$$ selling sandwich bags of "concert air" on Ebay?
I don't see why dwarves shouldn't also have magical abilities. They're celebrated for both magic rings and helmets of invisibility, for a start. And I remember the Dwarf wizards Kodak and Xerox an Australian friend used in Tunnels and Trolls back in the 80s; species wasn't too much of a problem.

Its a game. You can do whatever helps you have fun. Ive just played Warhammer awhile, so I like my Berserkers (Troll Slayers) to have orange hair, Dwarf RuneSmiths destroy magic- not cast it, not have Dwarf pony riders, etc. Not a big deal. I may do things different in Warbands anyway.
Watch this shiny object...

Look into my eyes, not around my eyes, in my eyes...

The hold of the EE is great upon you, resist... Resist... Resist...
Tolkien frequently has Dwarfs on ponies.
It's your own fantasy world, your armies can do what you want...
You will awake in 3... 2... 1...

Yeah, I know. I just like it that way. (no ponies) I could get behind rams or something, but not ponies. Pony rides sound like a six year old's day at the fair, not a battle-hardened Dwarf warriors mount to war.
