Title: Miniatures for DBA Early Imperial Roman options
Post by: Ken on 04 April 2015, 06:16:13 PM
I finally took a close look at the new lists in DBA 3 and the romans have had quite a few options added.

Some I can use Gauls, Celts, or Spanish for. Like Psiloi and Light Horse, others I have no idea what might be suitable.

The ones I'm having issues with are 3Wb Symmachiarii, 3Bd Gladiators, 3Kn Lancers, and LCm Dromedarii.

Any suggestions for these?

Thanks
Ken

Hello Ken

Symmachiarii  are German auxiliaries, have a look here at what somebody else did:-

There's no direct Dromedarii figure but this is what Warlord have done:-

I'd just use The mahdi camels http://www.pendraken.co.uk/SC8-p3758/ (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/SC8-p3758/)

For Lancers I'd use the Dacian/Samrmatian heavy cav AD3  http://www.pendraken.co.uk/AD3-p2717/ (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/AD3-p2717/)

Gladiators, I'd just use whatever you have left over for a suitable non-uniform unit  :).

Cheers

Gladiator gear was designed for spectacle not for combat, I'm guessing the gladiators would have been re-equipped with something more practical and protective.

The only time I can think of gladiators fighting in sufficient numbers to count as a 3Bd is at 1st Bedriacum in AD69 so the sword armed version of AR1 or AR13 might do. Possibly with armour blinged-up with gold or silver as befits Rome's equivalent of the stars of TOWIE :)

Thank you Grumpy Old Man, that's exactly what I needed.

I figured on using some left over Celts for the Symmachiarii, close enough for me. I'd completely missed the Mahdi Camel and Dacian/Sammratian Heavy Cavalry.

I'd love to have a base of Gladiators  :D I just can't imagine that Rome would field them in enough numbers or regularly enough to use it.  :-/ Maybe I'll sub in some Preatorian guards.

I'd bet heavily that they were not recognisable as gladiators once on the battlefield.

I'm sure you're right, but it would still be pretty cool.  8)

Those PD Madhi camel riders are really fantastic sculpts.
