Lovely stuff 8). The Empire was always my favourite army, but got clobbered in club games by uber Armies as I went for character rather than effectiveness :(.

Don't really understand the attraction of Warhammer but those are nice figures!

Don't really understand the attraction of Warhammer.

It's fine if you play with a like minded individual and get rid of the stupid uber stuff.

But then, I suppose, it's no longer Warhammer. ;)

Well the attraction of Warhammer is two different things

1) The Attraction of the Fluff

2) The Rules

On the Fluff part I would say that its a pretty attractive fantasy world supported by great art, some good books, and some interesting themes.

Waagghhh!  s stupid as it can seem does make the Warhammer Orcs not just another bunch of Orcs. Chaos is pretty awesome.  and may more

on the Rules part. Personally I was never super happy with Warhammer as a wargame. This is why while I collect armies, I do not play it and I am always looking for stuff. That said there are some very interesting stuff in it that make it unique

Unit Personalisation: While the bevy of special rules is one of the probelms of Warhammer, it does bring forward one of its best elements, which is that the units have personalities. Beastmen Ungors and Goblins would be the same kind of unit in many games, but in Warhammer, there is enough difference in the rules that they give out a unique style. Balck Orcs are not just stronger Orcs. They are something very different.

A great magic system: Warhammer probably has one of the most detailed and engrossing magic systems of any fantasy rules. It can be a bit tedious at times, and overpowering, but it is also something you have to think about, and a minigame.

Heroic Characters: Again a source of problems but also uniqueness. The RPG element in the characters is something that does permit you to create your own character.

In many ways Warhammer is one of the few games were the two same armies from the same faction can be very different in character. This customisation I believe is what gives it strength as a game system, but also its main weakness.

We did have one chap at the club who played for fun and had great character to his army. He left in the end as he was fed up with playing Competition Armies, even when the game was arranged as a friendly :(.

Don't blame him.  I won't play with people who do that.

When I discover a "killer combo" (I think you can find that in most systems) I won't use it again unless we're doing a "special."

It's a rule set that can't work out what it's trying to be.

It's not as good a skirmish game as Mordheim and it's not as good a big battle game as Warmaster. Both of which share the background fluff.

As ever, if people enjoy it then good on them ... but it does my head in!

I always thought of it as a "heavy" skirmish game.
