Thanks everyone. It is weird, I have never had an issue seeing a DBA army as an army, but if i tried the same thing with 19th century stuff or fantasy I would be weirded out. What weird creatures we are!

Right now I have the following Projects. Big long term projects with a definite end are Grand Projects, one with no end are Open projects, and small projects with an end are side-shows. Projects that are done (i.e no more than minor opporunity additions, and no intention of selling) are Done Projects

Grand Projects

DBA -> 7 of 8 armies done

Warhamemr1000 (collecting 1000 points of each Warhammer army)-> Revised (just collect the ones I started)-> 4 of 7 done. Frankly I have thought many times to give up on this project. I like Warhammers fluff, and some of the GW miniatures, ad like elements of the Warhammer rules, but I do not like the whole, and I have yet to find a Fantasy rules system that keeps the good of warhmmer (weapon and armor differences, character of the units, magic) and gets rid of the bad (long turns, exhausting battles, multiplicity of special rules)

Open Project

19th Century 10mm (armies of the period at various tactical sizes)-> Right now 1877 Russians, and working on Union ACW. Next is Confederates, and Danes adn Austrians for 1864. After that Greeks for 1897, probably at least 1 Balkan War Army and we will see. I have no problem just collecting hodgepodge forces and throwing them in the table in imaginary battles. So in this form it is fancy. All armies based the same 20x20mm swaures for infantry, 25mm for cavalry/artillery so as to be able to be used with multiple rules systems.

Side-shows

1/2400 Ottoman and Greek Navies of the 1st Balkan War (WIP. 2 Ottoman BBs and 3 Greek ones done. Still need 2 more Ottoman BBs, and a Greek Armored Cruiser, plus maybe secondary units (LCs, DDs). My rules of choice right now are Perfidious Albion, though I am not completely happy with them.

1/2400 Russian Navy at the Battle of the Yellow Sea RJW (WIP. All Russian BBs done, need 4 PCs, and to decide how to represent Destroyers). Op Cit on Perfidious Albion.

10mm Historical/Fantasy Mideval armies (based for warmaster). I am building a Dogs of War army based on Pendraken Swiss as a present to a friend (initially would had been Impetus, but moved away from the system). Basing is Warmaster style. I like elements of Warmaster, but it just seems tooo busy for me. I am looking at probably using Hail Ceasar for my fantasy gaming (vanilla with maybe a magic system plugged in). I am happy with the flexibility of Black Powder and thing it could do the thing for my fantasy gaming.

Done Project

28mm 4-6 Point Anglo-Saxon Warband. Done, played a lot of SAGA in Statesboro, Georgia, no one plays it in Turkey or Greece. Gave a 4 point Viking army as a present to a friend of Greece, but we have only been able to play once in the last six months. That said I am keeping it. I have no intention of building right now a second SAGA army in 28mm.

1/2000 (Valiant) Age of Sail. Best value of money ever! 12 Ships + Kiss me Hardy. Cost me about 30$ total. I have gotten some of the best games of my life to this point out of them. That said the challenge of building the ships turns me off from any idea of expanding the fleets.

Dropped Projects

28mm Napoleonics. I painted a Brigade worth of French, and have 24 lonely Bavarians. But I have given up on 28mm as a mass scale. I am looking at it now as a collectors scale (since 54mm is hard to survive my moves). I will keep some models, and give the rest away, probably as gifts or in barter.

15mm War of Austrian Succession. I have always wanted to do 18th century warfare. I bought a full Austrian Army for Might and Reason from QRF models. Never touched it :( sold it off

Stuff I really want to do

TYW/ECW

18th Century

War of the Roses using the Perfect Captain's great rules.

The good news is that Turkey really helps with self-discipline in projects. Since there are almost no hobby stores, and the ones that exist are msotly GW stuff, it is very hard for me to impulse buy. Everything has to be ordered in big batches from outside the country. So I can apply the breaks to any impulse.

I am considering building small 15mm SAGA or Lion Rampant armies for all of my friends to celebrate the upcoming 25 year anniversary of me knowing them. That is 5 armies.

I have several rules with projects, not that I always obey them, but which help

1) No long term project should be started for which I do not have opponents, or for which I cannot do at least two opposing armies.
If it costs money and time, I better have an opponent or afford time and money wise two forces.

2) Projects need to be either simple enough that they can be done quickly, or have  quickly attainable goals that provide some instant gratification.
If I cannot get in a game after 6 months of work, then I will lose interest.

3) Projects should maximize multiplayer potential.
If you cannot host 3-4 people at least with your collection, it may be sunk costs

4) War-game armies are painted to a satisfactory but simple level. Avoid miniatures and companies which would require tons of work to bring that satisfactory and simple level.

I leave the layering, multiple highlights for  single figures I collect for display, not wargame reasons. Gone are the days were  I would do this http://phdleadhead.blogspot.com.tr/2009/08/40k-space-marines.html (http://phdleadhead.blogspot.com.tr/2009/08/40k-space-marines.html) for a wargame army , even if I love it

5) When doing a project always assume you will not have space. Use rules that respect that, avoid rules that do not.
Academia means moving a lot as a junior scholar. Which means that you cannot rely on a) having a club around b) having space

6) If you are working on a project and have not touched it for 2 years, or played at least once with it in those two years, Jettison it
not always the best decision, and you will at least sometimes regret it (I regretted selling a 1000 point High Elf army I had, when 5 years later I decided to do Warhammer 1000. But regrets are parts of life

7) If you cannot find rules that make you happy, and you are not confident of making rules by your own, do not do the project.

Hope these help
