Gentlemen of the Forum.
I have this weekend taken stock of my lead mountain, and tallied my spreadsheet (v16 edit 4.2), and have come to a startling conclusion. I may have run out of things to buy from Pendraken.
I know, I know. It seems impossible. All those lines and I can't find
anything? Let me explain. It's the government's fault. In the last few years the government has cut funding to local authorities, who have savagely cut advice services. I work for an advice service, and feel a bit like a polar bear on a rapidly shrinking ice floe. Thus, I expect on a year to year basis to be allowed to go, and breathe a sigh of relief every time I make it through. To hedge against a period of employment inactivity, I have been making regular purchases from Pendraken, and stock piling paints, brushes and hamster food.
So far then, the state of play is:
Clop, clop, swish, swish
- Republican Roman, Carthaginian, Greek - Pendraken are relaunching the Greeks? (I know Greeks are tramp, tramp, poke, poke but they fit here.)
- Saxon, Norman, Viking - bought
- Stephen and Matilda - bought
- Anglo-Scottish - bought
- War of the Roses - Bought
Clop, clop, pop, pop
- WSS - bought
- Napoleonic - waiting for Pendraken British
Clop, clop, bang, bangbrmm, brmm, bang, bang- WWII: Britain (1940, 1942, 1944, Paratroopers 1944)- bought
- WWII: German (1940, 1942, 1944, Paratroopers 1940, 1944)- bought
- WWII: Italy- bought
- WWII: USSR (1941)- bought
- WWII: France (1940)- bought
- Korea - waiting for Chinese infantry
Whoosh, whoosh, zap, zap- Aliens, bugs, zombies, marines etc - bought
This is as far as my plans extend, but where now? I know what I don't want - AWI, 7YW, Lo the bloominA, Colonial, Spanish CW. Could be tempted by Samurai but I am daunted by the painting; perhaps WWI; perhaps a mid C19 European mash up (Austria vs France vs Prussian vs Britain) like Brittains on steroids; Byzantines would be nice to take on the Normans in Sicily. Quite fancy the ECW, but the whole pike/musket thing never looks right to me. Falklands is too near, Viet Nam too jungley, though Arab-Israeli would be quite fun ... if we had the infantry. Fantasy doesn't really do it for me en masse.
So, Gentlemen of the forum. Have you any (polite) suggestions?
Melt it all down and sculpt one, life size, Techno ;)
Boer War perhaps? Or maybe just general North West frontier type action of the same period
Franco-Prussian War.
Boxer Rebellion?
Persians?
Later Romans vs PICTS?
When the PICTS get released.
Shall I say PICTS again?
The only thing you should say as much as Picts is Aztecs. And the only thing you should say more than either is armoured and armed werewolves.
Go with the Samurai. You need a challenge. 8)
Redoing the ancient Greek line? Where did you hear that? (I need to order more of the old ones, now...) :'(
Late 19th C. would get my vote, interesting period, comprehensive ranges, loads of options.
Samuari are lovely, but soul and sole destroying to paint. They take 100% of your painting talent and still sit there going 'we can take more'!
Greeks are in Techno's 'to do list'.
Maybe something different, I'm still mulling over the Schleswig Holstein question.
Or something like Jack and his modern campaign approach?
An imaginary Centurian company fighting their way out of 'Country X' which has gone rouge.
Regulars use Argentine forces, irregular use NVA/VC?

I think Pendraken still sell their old Republican Romans even after making a new line too, so might be the same with the Greeks.

Yep, we'd still have the old moulds in the workshop so we can always supply previous ranges to folks still expanding their armies.

Awesome!!! ;D
So, back to the business of helping this gentleman finding something to buy... 8)
I'd also suggest FPW or an ImagiNations conflict set in the 18th or 19th Century, so that you can pick and choose figures that you like.
The sand of the desert is sodden red,—
Red with the wreck of a square that broke;—
The Gardner's jammed and the Colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks:
"Pay up! Pay up! Colonial's the game!"
WWI is a great range - and you need early war and late war so double the buying. And there are 3 fronts (at least), Western Front, Eastern Front, and Middle East. So lots of different figures needed.
For WWII you need some mid to late war Russians.
Colonial is an area I am thinking about getting into - Red Coats are always a plus, but you get later khaki or grey uniforms and all sorts of native opposition.
When the early war German Fallshirmjager that Techno has done for 1940 are released you will need some more of those.
Japanese to go against your early WW2 Russian.
Or
NW frontier - Either traditional colonial or
Interwar ie the Waziristan Campaign

APW - excellent ranges and loads of background material plus some decent rule sets around nowadays.
French indian war?
Haven't DeAgostini just realised a Build Your Own Life Sized Centurion - complete with magazine.
Comes in 5,000 issues - first issue £2.99' subsequent issues £7.99. ;)
Seriously (?) go ECW.
Love the ECW minis ;)
Hello fsn
For a good general purpose 'war' how can you look past Eastern Front WW1!! This can morph to RCW, Balkan wars (ImagiNations as well), Back of Beyond, travel even further East with Warlord China. Add WW1 Italians and Austrians. You can make a whole new lead pile without too much thought. :D :D.
Cheers

If classical Greeks, I'd say Achaemenid Persians were an obvious choice too. Though you might need to strain the resources of every suitable 10mm producer to get a reasonable range of figure types.

Early war German Fallshirmjager for 1940? Is he going to produce some early war 1940 opponents for them?
Couldn't say, John. :-\
The Germans were a 'special' at Orcs' request. (i.e. He 'funded' them, through the 'You want what making' system.)
Cheers - Phil
Mongols!!!
Nuff said.
surely you need some ancient Spanish to go with the Carthagians?
7YW, ECW, C19th, Zulu's, lots of ancients (Gauls, Dacians, Imperial Romans etc...), dare I say it... Mongols. Possibilities are endless (almost)
You could always try painting some of them. :) :) :)

I will, I will :P
Meeting with 2 directors (as if one isn't enough) on Monday. This discussion could well be moot by Monday evening. :-SS
However ... Falklands War program on Discovery History ... Ooooh .... pretty Pendraken range ...
Anyway. I have narrowed it down to ...
- Falklands War (This may come off the list when the program ends)
- Russian 1944
- Japanese WWII (1939 Khalkhin Gol)
- NW Frontier - either 1880ish or 1920-30ish
- Dien Bien Phu - big clear bit of airfield
- C19 Little Wars on Steroids - bit I want Brits in Home Service Helmet and Austrians in white! :'(
- Ancient Greeks. Not too fussed about Persians, I want the Greeks taking on Carthaginians and Republican Romans ... and each other
- WWI 1914 ... or 1918 ... in Italy ... or Eastern Front ... or the Middle East
- 1956 Suez
... or something else.
Can't help you with any of that.
1956 Suez you know you want too
Regards
Sean
ECW would be nice, but it doesn't give me a huge buzz, and I do think that the ECW requires big units and big armies. Can't be doing with units of 4 pikemen flanked by 8 musketeers!
Mongols just don't do anything for me at all. Sorry Mongol lovers.
Byzantines now. :-\ I remember someone posting about how you could craft a Byzantine army from other ranges. Who was that?
Imperial Rome would be fine ... but who as an enemy? Perhaps somewhere in the East?

There are Byzantines in 10mm in the Old Glory and Magister Militum catalogues, and lots of scope for conversion (I even have a few Copplestone figures in my army). They make a valuable addition to Crusades-era possibilities.

I AM DECIDED! Sort of.
I think my new project will have to be a 1959 "let's twist history into complete fantasy" type thing. I fancy a mixed bag of "Brits" (Using Conquerors (which may become a new favourite), Land Rovers (did I see a Saracen somewhere?) and ... CENTURIONS, facing off against the Soviet backed menace (I feel flags flying from turrets) using IS III's T54/55 and BTRs of various hues, with American/French backed government using M48s, AMX13 and something ... (Don't you love a three way?)
I'm sure I can scrag up some infantry from one range or another - French Indo-China for one, may even scare up a few from the Falklands ranges.
Artillery - sure they were still using WWII artillery in 1959 ... and I'm feeling rather non-European. What does Central America look like? :D :D :D
Gentlemen. I am enthused. I shall have a happy weekend in planning - between painting the 1941 Russians on my table.
I bought some T35's from another manufacturer. I am very, very sorry. :(
... and helicopters. There has to be helicopters.
Where can I get a Whirlwind/S55/H19?

BURN THE HERETIC!!! BURN HIM ! BURN HIM | :D
It was either that or I campaigned for a Pendraken T35. I compromised my integrity rather than start "T35 - and you thought the Centurion was bad!"
If someone's doing helicopters can we have Blue Thunder with a bodyguard of (separate) werewolves armoured in chainmail with swords and/or axes and round shields?
Is that a set of metal links around their masculine regions?
Listening to 4 Extra yesterday - reading of Beowulf. Henay distcitly said CHAINMAIL. Comtempary reference to it. So YOUSE IS WRONG.
