This battle was preceded by the excellent Scharnhorst Campaign system which I played by email with a wargaming friend (NickB) over a few evenings. Full Batrep to follow (ran out of time today and working 10-22 next three days :( ) I played the game solo today texting Nick updates as the battle progressed.
In a nutshell the Austrian were brought to battle by some canny manouvering on the campain map by the French and needed to defeat the french to win the campaign. the French held the balance of VP's awarded for pre-battle campaigning despite being outnumbered in recon terms 3-1. All the French needed to do was hang on until nightfall...
I think this worked beautifully as a PBEM game.
Ideal for solo gamers :-bd

That's a brilliant batrep Nosher; personally I was cheering the Austrians.
Don't know if it's the system or the way you play but you could really feel the pressure the commander was under :-bd
The pressure on the Austrians was immense from the start.
In Blucher you have 30 turns (assuming the battle starts in the morning). Each side has 15 turns. The game ends at nightfall and victory conditions are very tight indeed.
In the Scharnhorst Campaign System control of Cities, Town and Villages equates to Victory Points. the Austrians had a deficit of 2 VP's at the start of the day so had to Capture Zellerode (and more importantly hold it until nightfall) which is quite tough to do, OR break the French Army.
Added to this some very cunning manouvres during the campaign season had brought a French reinforcement column within marching distance of the Austrian Flank. The battle was also being fought widthways as opposed to lengthways across a 6x4 tables so the French didn't need to worry too much about being flanked.
The Austrians had to get a shufty on and although their Momentum Rolls were quite decent they simply couldn't concentrate on one point in the line in any strength.
The Austrians broke with only two french units routed to their five in turn 28. Had the french been able to play turn 29 it could easily have seen another three Austrian units routing!
