Driven by nostalgia, I've been converting some of the old Pendraken sci fi battle armour troopers into Mk VI Lamenters marines (details in this thread: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,11543.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,11543.0.html)). Now I have the first couple painted up, it seemed like a good time to create a thread here to show how they look painted, and save anyone who just wants to see the finished models from having to trawl through the conversion thread.
Apologies for the differing quality of the photos. I'm experimenting with taking photos on my phone at the moment.
So, without further ado, here's the commander all painted up:

Here's the first marine I painted for this project (he took longest to do, ironically, as I couldn't decide on a chapter)

Finally (for now), another bolter-armed marine:

Nice. They could have done some damage in the painting competition.
Thanks Clib. I had hoped to get at least one done in time for the competition. But there's always next year, eh? Who knows what I'll have brewed up by then!

Top notch; really impressive work Atavus. :-bd
Must be nice painting a mini you've created; you know exactly how it's supposed to look ;)
Very, very, very impressive.
(Have I ever worked with you ?)
Cheers - Phil
Obviously not Phil - that's much better than yours ;)

Nicely painted.
Thank for the kind words everyone. Once these guys are varnished, I hope to get the last two marines (for now) painted soon, and I'll put a group shot together.

It certainly is. Makes the painting easier too when you're not guessing what certain components represent. There's also more freedom with conversions than when you sculpt for production. No worrying about undercuts, or which materials you use.

I don't think so, Techno. But I did work with a chap named Phil during my time working in one of the Bristol GW stores at the turn of the century (okay, 1999-2000, but I love being able to use that phrase!) if that rings any bells?

Got an idea, but what's an undercut?
Seriously nice work!

In simple terms the deep bits of a model the mould might get wrapped round and tear as the figure is removed. That help?
Both the conversion work and the paint job are top notch. Excellent looking little chaps.
Blimey. Seen worse *sculpting* on the official 28mm scale originals, let alone the paint job :D

Stonking! Good! Work!
Wow!! Greats conversions and very nice painting. My compliments... Bravo! =D>
Great!, are you going for Salamander chapter? - (modification : Ok just read the title of the blog.... :-\ I guess do not need to answer my question)
If you are trying to take 10mm pics I recommend you a light --> figure <-- Mirror . Mirror will bring light to those dark areas without having bulky / wierd light boxes with 2 or three focus
It is economical, fast and good pics in dark rooms. 10mm and 6mm are not esasy to take pics.

Very useful when your only spare time begins at 22:00 or 22:30 in the night
I'll give that a go ; nice tip :-bd
A white piece of card will work nearly as well as the mirror

Have you tried one of those little tripods from Poundland. I have two of different heights and they are really good at stopping the wobbles, DT's and any other cause of the dreaded shakes you can think of.

Will give that a go ;)
The waviness is on screen though; it's like a tv that's slightly out of tune with slow, vertically scrolling lines :-\
Amazing work !
I can' wait to see more :D
Nice photo tips, JChaos and PaulR! I do own a lightbox, but I tend not to set it up for the quick WIP photos. Plus, I love tinkering with all the options on a new phone :)
Small update. I feel like I rushed this guy a bit. Certainly the zoomed-in photo shows a couple of areas that could do with a tidy-up:
But hopefully, I should get my 5th marine finished tonight in time for a game of Fivecore at the weekend. Then I'll have to concentrate on my Open University assignment for a couple of weeks before I can play again.
I'd use a white polystyren panel in this case.
Refract the light better, don't cause reflection.
Love the flamer!
Another cracker :-bd
Damn fine stuff again, Atavus !
Cheers - Phil
Top work!
Only just found these , excellent work.

8) soo good
Very good work! Can't wait to see a full tactical squad all prettied up :D
I was hoping to do some scifi stuff in 10mm but the guy doing it with me wants 6mm :'( :'( :'(
Thanks for the comments everybody. It's really helping me stay on track with this project. Could this be the first project in over a decade that I finally see through to conclusion? Fingers crossed...
Anyhoo, I should be confined to a quiet room right now and working on my assignment, but I couldn't resist posting an update on the Lamenters so far. Here's another marine with bolter, bringing my total of marines up to five:
And, as promised, a group shot of the lads so far (the camera on my phone has a really pants focal width. Good for single figures, but not so good for groups. I'll take a better one with my camera next time):
Abhor the Xenos (the gloss varnish undoes a lot of the highlight work that went into this guy, but I really wanted shiny aliens):
Finally, a little look at the 'battlefield' in a pizza box (idea flagrantly stolen from someone on TMP, whose name I shamefully didn't remember, but who deserves credit for a great idea nonetheless), and the scenery that I started making when I realised that my stocks of 10mm scale scenery were... scant, to say the least:
If you're wondering "why a pizza box?", it's for the sake of convenience, really. I'm not going to be playing any big games for a while, so I don't need a whole lot of space, and since we will be moving house in a couple of months, I figured something portable would be a good idea. This way, I can have a game without having to dig through various boxes full of terrain/models.

There's some nice 6mm stuff out there, BeardedHammer. Good variety, too. I just feel like it's that little bit too small for games with individually based models (probably something to do with my aging eyes). Mind you, if funds allow, there's nothing to stop you getting a few packs of 10mm models to show your pal what he's missing out on!
That finished squad is superb =D>
These really are very good.
Cracking stuff. :-bd
Nice one! 8)
What they said - top notch.
I'd be tempted to do something Necromunda ish in scope, with a Rogue Trader era feel. So five models are a full "warband". Doubly so if they're Spez Maroons.
Stonking !
Cheers - Phil.
Awesome
Thank'ee kind folks! Glad you like 'em :D

That's exactly the sort of awesome idea I'd like to make a reality. In The Emperor's Name might do the job. Or I could dig out the old Necromunda rules, of course... I would like to make some tall scenery with walkways, gantries and so forth, but it will probably require a bit of planning (not my strongest suit).
Liking the term Spez Maroons, by the way ;D
Looking fab.....
brilliant!

I really don't think GW have people trawling the internet forums looking for space marine references to protect their IP....that would be nuts, something that only a severely paranoid, megalomaniacal company would do.
(er, they probably do don't they....)

Have you seen some of their legal cases?
