Title: Warband "Unboxing"
Post by: AndyT on 27 February 2015, 09:01:50 PM
Well sort of...

A few pics of the stuff that arrived today (very quick delivery by the way  :))

The full order (Goblin army plus some extra figures and dice frames):

The army pack:

Dice and dice frames:

100x50 base with trolls:

Semi-circular hit markers (bigger than I expected):
(I may put these on the bases rather than next to them, to make movement easier)

And finally the very nice Squogglers:

Impressive; love the new packaging too, very professional looking.

Bet that weighed a bit if it was all in one box!  ;)

It was a big (heavy) padded envelope. I also had another heavy parcel from a different comoany. Don't think I am my posties favourite person right now !

I've only taken a good look at the trolls and squogglers so far, and they are lovely little models.

(Read the following in a Poirot accent  ;) )  Of course you know that by 'resisting' this will cause you great angst, which in turn will cause you to feel tense, this will make you unable to relax, and alas your muscles will be taught and your movements spasmodic, unfortunately this will make your painting suffer and this will cause you even more anxiety.  No the answer is clear my friend, as clear as the nose on your face as you English say.  You should get your little goblin army and be happy, that way you will paint par excellance and that way you will be happy and paint all the more faster and better than if you continued to refuse yourself such a little pleasure of having the little green warband.

(Well that is the kind of reasoning I use to excuse my own purchases, and who am I to argue with those fantastic little grey cells!   :D  )

They should be, they're in the army list.

The undead zomies are a good choice too, especially if you give them the upgrade to make them a 'shambling horde'.   :D

The Goblin War Horde begins to gather...

Top right; Trolls.
Then from left to right going down the picture - Archers, Scouts, Empty base for another unit of archers (figures ordered !), Bolt Shooters, 2 units of Wolf Riders (not yet assembled), Shaman (will get plenty of scenic stuff to fill up the base), Warriors with spears fronted by Orcs (will perhaps give this unit "Shieldwall"), Chieftain, another warrior unit and three more on the next row.

I have also ordered some giant spiders for an interesting unit with the skirmish ability.

A close-up of the chieftain's unit:

Lots of painting to be done !  :D

Very nice.

It's interesting that you appear to be gluing the figures onto the base before painting.  I'm thinking of taking that approach so i'll be interested to read/see how it works out.
Title: Re: Warband "Unboxing"
Post by: AndyT on 01 March 2015, 08:27:16 PM
I won't glue all of the "close order" stuff on straight away, just half the figures to make it easier for painting.

I've enjoyed sorting out the units but painting may take a while. Unfortunately this is about 143rd on my painting project list.

To be honest it is why I base the way I do. All of the Sudan stuff on both sides and medieval stuff were all stuck down first.

I don't.  We're talking rank and file here (and this won't be to everyone's taste), I only paint what I can get to but you'd be surprised how little gets missed".

Works for me :)

As for elites, commander etc; I paint individually.

I always glue everything first, then base, then paint.

Hmm...I really ought to apply the base material (pollyfilla) first as it's a right pain in the @$$ at the end :-\

Good plan ;)

OK, that's me convinced.

I think i'll try basing everything up, including ground texture etc. before painting.  Maybe try it on one unit and see how it works out.

Once the rest of my Hill Dwarves arrive i've a feeling my evenings are going to be busy!

Not sure how this would work on a Warband base though; that's a big old unit!
Title: Re: Warband "Unboxing"
Post by: Luddite on 02 March 2015, 11:57:01 AM
Actually i'm thinking it might be better, as I can paint the unit as a cohesive whole, to get the tone and overall look right, rather than 30 individual figures.

Like if there's a magic user unit it'll be easier to paint the 'glowing stone' at the centre, and its lighting effects across the assembled unit than trying to do that with each figure seperately.

I also like the idea of painting only what you can see.   :D  Anything that cuts out the workload on painting is a good thing for me.  I'm a player not a painter.   :)

Slow progress with the Goblin army......

Everything has been undercoated in black. Since taking these photos I've started on the basic colours, beginning with skin on the goblins and trolls, but the light had gone so more photos will have to wait a while.

This is the first thing I've painted for myself in a long while. I'm usually painting for other people.

I've gone for green goblin skin - yes, I know there have been long discussions about this on other groups in the past, but I like working with green because it makes a change from regular "flesh" colours.

Just roughly painted on for now, in shades of green, blue or red as 'appropriate' (?):

The detail is starting to show up nicely. I think those Trolls are going to paint up a treat.

Sadly I won't get any painting done this weekend - too many chores and Mothering Sunday duties to perform !

Cheers, Andy

And more than 6 months later (!) the goblin army is almost finished. Just some finishing touches and the varnish then I am ready to go. I never said I was a fast painter  :(

If those bad people at Pendraken hadn't forced me to go to Colours and buy a High Elf army I might have finished the goblins at the weekend !
