Title: Looking for base size opinions
Post by: Ken on 24 February 2015, 10:53:46 PM
While I wait for my order, I've been thinking a lot about base sizes.

I've been playing DBA for a few years now in 6mm and the 40mm bases have worked out fine, but after seeing the Warband basing and looking at some of the 10mm Impetus armies, I'm tempted to go bigger. I've also looked at Hail Cesar and thought about multi basing using 40mm squares.

I'd like my bases to look like they belong on the battle field and are not just a pretty counter representing an unspecified number of troops.

Any help or thoughts about this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ken

40 square give you a nice flexibility if you then put two or three together for a unit. I use there  40x30 for mine.

I've played around with the idea of 30mm squares and using multiple for a unit. They would certainly be flexible.

Those look great! I've been looking at some of the 60mm based stuff and I'm thinking that maybe the way I go.

Here's three shots of my FPW on 60mm squares. I use two to a unit. The 60mm allows for dioramas, including the Prussian reserves marching to the firing line in column. I use these with Black Powder and FOB2. Markers mean I don't have to worry about putting units into various formations.

Sorry about the light, but you get the idea.

It rather depends on whether or not you want your units to be able to change formation. DBA and Impetus don't really bother with formation changes, so larger fixed bases would probably go well. Hail Caesar, on the other hand, works on a bigger scale, and you might want therefore to think about multiple unit bases. You and always use them on movement trays for the other games.
