I was tidying the old painting desk yesterday an cleared some rubbish: empty pots, cocktail sticks, empty blister packs and the like ( not to mention all the painting bog roll) and it struck me how often I have to do this.
So, is wargaming / painting / modelling a messy hobby or is it just me? :-\
It's just you :D
Just kidding - I'm always amazed by all the bits of plastic with paint on, cocktail sticks, old pots etc I seem to collect
It's a messy hobby. Anybody who has visited our unit can attest to that... :D
I must empty half a Sainsbury's bag every 3 days or so! Dread to think what I'm doing to the planet :o
Messy, MESSY - never. :o
Well, now I come to look around, well perhaps 'messy' isn't quite the right word, organised mayhem might be a better description at times (at least in my dreams it's organised). :)
It's not such a case Of clearing the mess on the desk as trying to find the desk under the mound of stuff piled down the end of the extension...
So, yeah. Bit messy!

This actually makes me feel uncomfortable X_X
Yes, I
do have issues ;)
I have to be tidy as I have no dedicated painting space, and so have to store my stuff under the stairs. Mind you, if I did have a space it would be tidy as that's in my nature and how I operate at work.
How much rubbish do you generate?
I used to be messy when I had my painting table in the loft of the old place but since Narnia has been painted and carpeted I made a conscious decision to keep it tidy. The place gets hoovered and dusted once a week whether it needs it or not! I have a few bases of chaps undercoated and ready to go but that's it. Another pledge I made to myself was to keep only one project on the table at a time, so when I get bored with something it now gets filed in a box in the painting cupboard waiting for my interest to resurface. So while I am into 6mm FPW I have the remains of the French Battlepack awaiting some reinforcements, a bag of unpainted Prussians, eight buildings, three sticks of Prussians and the last four blocks of French undercoated and ready to go, and that's it.
I've had a tidy up as well
My desk is what can only be described as a total TIP.
The only (sort of) free space on it, is an A2 cutting mat...But at the moment that's only half clear.
I get through around a 'carrier bag's' worth of rubbish a week....Mostly acetone soaked sheets of kitchen towel, chewing gum, white metal dust and bits of unused, mixed putty.
I make an attempt at tidying it up about once a month...Which is a total waste of time, as it only takes 5 minutes to get back to normal. X_X
Cheers - Phil
Yup.
But I have to put away every night when I finish. Little one would tear the place apart...
I guess I do a bag every two months?
My painting desk has a unit of FPW French dragoons on the painting rods, some 3mm buildings being finished off and some dismounted figures to be converted into French dragoons in winter finery as the cavalry contingent of the Army of the North.
Steve, Phil; you're both slobs :)
Lemmey; given the amount you paint it's amazing you create so little ;)
Not as much as I would like tbh! ;D

Picasso thought so :P
Utter tosh. Just an excuse for 'can't be arsed to tidy up.'

Yes, I keep quite a tidy desk as well.
I that case my desk makes me the most genius genius of geniusity that ever genii'd!
The biggest 'problem' for me, is having dozens...Sometimes, even hundreds of wee men on the table.....Either, already 'on the go', or 'next in line'. (Usually in little zip-lock bags)
If I started keeping them all in wee drawers, I'd end up spending ages looking for them.
(I know I put that somewhere safe....But which safe place was it ?)
Priorities also change for the next in line.
So, if there's something (including a range of figures) that's half completed...That has to stay on the table for safety's sake, until I can return to it.
Bob shamed me into a clear up this morning....But it hasn't made a lot of difference. I filled a small pot with figures that ARE surplus to requirements.
The desk probably isn't as messy as I think it is sometimes.
I can always find what I'm looking for, anyway ! ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil

Someone's recent thread about a CD tower for modelling makes perfect sense in this context... I'm intrigued and may keep an eye on the old Freecycle ;)

No figures are ever surplus to requirement! Actually, that would make a cracking Pixar film; Phil would be the bad guy ;)
Painting table: clean and ordered.
Attic/loft space: filled with crap.

I'll rephrase that ! ;)
Surplus to requirements, regarding what I'm working on at the moment. (They weren't all figures....There were lots of 'bits of things' too .
They were just cluttering up the table. ;)
Cheers - Phil.
Is your real name Gargamel?
I think, we need to know the truth Phil

He'll admit he's Gargamel if FSN admits he's Westmarcher ;)
Westmarcher and I have the same sort of relationship as Nina Conti and Monkey, or for the older ones amongst us Keith Harris and Orville, or for Techno, Peter Brough and Archie Andrews.
Please note: Subsequent jokes about the placement of my right hand are not, repeat not required.

Actually some ventriloquists use their left hand inserted you know where, so perhaps this is just a ruse by FSN to stop us commenting what where his left hand is! :P

Yep, nothing inspired was ever produced by a tidy person. My painting table is 24" x 18" but the surface I actually work on is about 6" x 9". All the rest is covered by junk. Bit light on inspiration though...
My table is small so naturally is very cluttered, but I am a bit OCD so always tidying as I go along, it's a hard old job!
Only thing that I really have to 'tidy' ....almost constantly at the moment X_X.....is white metal 'dust', from grinding bits off all the metal masters, while they get converted.
Cheers - Phil.

Yeah, I wonder how dangerous that stuff is :-\
I don't think I'm getting to breathe any of the stuff in, Gareth.
I wash my hands thoroughly though, so I don't end up 'eating' any of it.
