Title: American war of Independance NOOB
Post by: barbarian on 05 February 2015, 09:55:13 PM
I've ben watching Sons of Liberty lately.
I know the wonderful minis from Clib.

But I'm a big noob.

-Is there any minis usable into the  Fench-indian wars range for the AWI ?
- What rules ? My main problem with Black powder is the price of the books, b ut it seems like a good rule set for noobs.

BP isn't the greatest set of rules (but I do like Hail Caesar) . They are very much of the toolkit approach - so if you don't know the period you are going to struggle to adapt them.

We played a bit of Muskets and Tomahawks (having loved Saga) but found it all a bit too random - you could win a game, without really knowing why, or even engaging the enemy!!

Sorry, not much help as to what to use.

Hello Barbarian

Could I suggest the Perfect Captains rules John Bull/Patriots http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/jbull.html (http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/jbull.html) and Campaign Rules Swamp Fox http://www.perfectcaptain.50megs.com/swampfox.html (http://www.perfectcaptain.50megs.com/swampfox.html).

They are free to download and Perfect Captain is one of my first go-to points when I'm looking for rules. There is a French-Indian wars variant of Patriot on the Yahoo site https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/perfect_captain/files/Mohawk%20et%20Montcalm/ (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/perfect_captain/files/Mohawk%20et%20Montcalm/)

Alternatively there are quite a number of rules at the Free Wargame Wiki http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Category:18th_Century (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Category:18th_Century).

You could also have a look at Too Fat Lardies Sharp Practice http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=18&zenid=0521d9c460e86ac16248ecf86ff701d3 (http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=18&zenid=0521d9c460e86ac16248ecf86ff701d3)

Cheers

I'm a fan of Volley and Bayonet and use wing scale for AWI, they give a good fun game

I have pulled together some of Greg Novak's mods into a single document, pm if you would like a copy.

Thank you.
I'd like to base on 50 x 50, to create mini-diorama.
But I guess in these periods, column and lines makes a difference...

Should I go the traditional way of 40x20 ?

I must confess, it is unlikely I will play as my group of friends are more RPG or casual tabletop gamers oriented (Zombicide, Descent, Heroquest are the more miniature like games they know)

OMFG = Oh My Feckin God
tank = part of the holy trinity of Tank/Healer/Damage Dealers
fcking NOOB = common insult used in WoW to imply you havent a clue what youre doing
pull more = attack more monsters at once (i'm getting bored)
Gogogogogogo = common chant of the more impatient Damage Dealers (or loot whores as I like to describe them)

Barbarian. Here is my advice

Since your friends are not joining you, I would build two small opposed armies. For rules I would start simple. One option is to check out the free rules website pointed above and find something introductory. After that you can try the Captain's free rules (which are great but have a learning scale).  After that you can go for some of the commercial sets out there. Neil Thomas specializes in novice friendly rules (google it up)

For army builds I would do the following

First, if you are not going for skirmish gaming, I would use 20x20 mm square bases, with 3-4 infantry figures per base (4 in two ranks if you will). For cavalry I would either do 25x25 mm bases and 2 figures per base (for artillery 1 gun per base).

Second, I would collect let us say 30 bases of infantry, 10 bases of cavalry and 5 bases of artillery per side, plus 3 bases of commanders. These should give you a good force for each side whatever system of rules you use, and permit small multiplier games (you might win some friends over)

Third, do not hesitate to get a nice book on the ACW, as these can help get you more interested.

Hope these help.

I used :

Infantry :  20 x 20 (based in 4's)
Cavalry : 25 x 25 (based in 2's)
Skirmishers : 20 x 20  (based in 2's)
Artillery : 30 x 30  / 40 x 40  ( 3pdr / 6 pdr)

Command Units will be : 20/30mm round and even 50/60mm round

and use Black Powder(Rebellion) &/or British Grenadier Rules
