Title: Is there a problem?
Post by: Subedai on 29 January 2015, 09:08:41 AM
For the past two days, the first time I have tried to read the Unread Posts Since Last Visit it has come back with a message that there are no new posts yet when I look on the main forum page it shows them. Any ideas or is it just me?

Fine this end Subedai.

Is your computer caching the page?

I think your computer is just trying to protect you from the drivel that some people post.

I could give you names, but you probably know who they are.  ;)

Sounds like you've inadvertently downloaded a 'rogue' programme, Nirman.
I did the same with this computer, by mistakenly using a 'sponsored site' instead of the genuine Google Chrome one. (Muppet - Me....Trying to do things too quickly and not looking properly.)

In the pop-us/side bar...Is there a named 'firm' sending the cr*p ?
I found a good blog that took me through how to stop these bar-stewards......Didn't have to download anything...The blog just took me through it in nice easy steps.
If I remember correctly, I had to delete the programme from the hard drive...and also delete/change a setting on the browser.
Been fine since.

Back to Subedai.....No problems here, Matey.

Cheers - Phil

Come to the conclusion it's the bl**dy hamster not turning the wheel fast enough. It works fine after the initial problem so it's probably my dinosaur of a pc. Thanks all for the helpful (mostly) comments.  :)

Sounds like you've got that damned advertising virus i picked up last year.  Took me ages to figure out the solution.

I'd reccommend using ccleaner.  Download and run it every week or two and it really cleans out all these nasty little problems.

The adverts are a virus on your computer, so you'll need to get those sorted using the link Luddite as mentioned above.

This sometimes happens if you've been logged in without posting/changing page for a while?  If I go casting and leave the computer logged in, if I don't come back for a couple of hours the Forum will 'time-out' in some way and the Unread posts won't show up for me.  They're still visible in the Forum with 'New' tags next to them, but they don't come up when I click 'Show unread posts...'.

Similarly, if you log out without reading all of the 'Unread posts since last...' list, the next time you log in they will all have disappeared and you will only see the ones from the time you logged out.  You can still access the missing ones though, by clicking the 'All Unread Topics' in the bottom right of the 'Unread posts since last visit...' page.

Hopefully that all makes sense!

Yes I'm coughing and sneezing all over the place.

Just make sure your virus protection program is UTD, and run it. That will cure most problems. The other trick is to run system restore, back past the last up-date point. That should remove most of the new bugs.

That helps, but cetainly the virus i had was immune to all the protections i had on (i kind of work in privacy law and information security so i tend to go a bit overboard on all this stuff...and then...facebook  :-[ (which was, incidentally where this virus came from)).

I dug away for a good 5 hours before identifying the nasty little hidden files, including a shiny red 'uninstall' option.

I checked things out on the various fora etc. first...and luckily i did.  Apparently that particular little bug had an 'uninstall' killer file - if you clicked it, it wiped your hard drive.  Phew!

It's how i ended up at ccleaner, and i have to say it works a treat, picking up all the flilth that my anti-virus, malware, adware etc. seems to miss.  (and no, i'm not on their payroll!)

Incidentally, don't download it from my link - do your own searching.  You never know i could be a sneaky hacker giving you false information and a link to a virus that gives me access to all your holiday photos.   ;D
