Hi all,
Long time lurker ... first post. Anyone recommend a 10mm fig that could serve as the Rohan Cavalry from LOTR ?
Hi Backstab - good question, I've been thinking along the same lines: have a look here: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=992.0
How about a mix of Late Roman, Gallic and Dacian? :-\
The Pendraken ones mentioned would do fine - there are also some Copplestone Castings 'Horse Lords' figures that are very Rohirrim
I'd be thinking Late Roman as well. What shape shields did the Rohirrim carry?
I'd certainly use Normans if I were a fantasy enthusiast.
I don't remember it saying what shape of shields they had (though it's a while since i've read LOTR). I'd assumed they were round, but since they were based partly on Anglo-Saxons they could as easily have had kite shields like Normans and Anglo-Saxons, though they also had horse archers.
I do remember conical helms with horse-hair crests - any 10mm Goth cavalry with helmets would probably do for that. Lots of different historical figures (or the Copplestone fantasy ones) would do for those.
In the Two Towers, when Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are armed "Helms they chose, and round shields"
I would not let "round" force me to think "circular" as that might disqualify those lovely Late Roman cavalry with their oval shields -- they would be my choice as well.

"Helms they chose...". Thanks for reminding me why my schooldays enthusiasm hasn't survived into adulthood! Verily.
Thanks heaps for the info !
I would go late roman too
Just wondering if Backstab did up his Rohirim

Sorry guys but my attention has been diverted back to 10mm WW2. Until I find a set of rules that I like, the Middle Earth project is on hold. I have got the Hail Caeser Rules on order and will see if I can make some changes with it to accomadate some fantasy armies.
Why not have a look at the Warmaster variant Battle of the Five Armies ruleset?
Same "youknowhat", different bucket
And designed for 10mm they might be worth looking at for Middle Earth battles...

That's what i used, combined with riders from the Carthage range.
The Rohan had large round shields, mail shirts and haberks and 'charged fiercely with spears'.
You could try having a look at this, it might give you some inspiration
