Dutch cavalry wage a desperate fight on the right wing and get historically clobbered.

Here the Spanish left falls on the Dutch, much damaged by gun and musket fire. The Dutch gamble on their firepower instead of defensive pike formations and devastate the Tercios with closing fire and subsequent melee.

Yes it is!
Superb looking game, lovely painted minis. :)
Good looking game, Pijlie. And, of course, the Dutch left was mainly English. ;)

Maybe they were afraid to get their feet wet? In a scenario I have seen for this battle, there were rules for the tide coming in, and the possiblity of some naval support appearing. Did you do anything similar?
No. nothing like that. It is a interesting scenario in that it pits two very asymmetrical opponents against each other. On the one side the Dutch with their modern (for the time) brigades of standard pike/shotte units in 1:2 proportions supported with good cavalry and on the other side classic Spanish tercios with large pike blocks and some small shotte units (3:2), mediocre cavalry and unreliable mercenary units. Both sides have little artillery present. The armies are more or less equal: Dutch 9 pike and 18 shotte units, 6 cuirassier units and two light cavalry and the Spanish 21 large pike units, 14 small shotte units and 2 cuirassier and 4 light cavalry units.
You start more or less in the historical starting positions of three consecutive Dutch lines versus two big Spanish wings and a reserve. The battlefield is narrow with the sea on one side and rough ground (dunes) on the other. The obvious course is for the Spaniard to close as soon as possible and for the Dutch to postpone contact as long as possible while weakening the Spanish through firepower.
Nice looking game!
