One often-cited, major source for the 14th century, the Romance of Alexander by Pseudo-Callisthenes, Instittuto Ellenico di Venezia codex 5, has been attributed to the Empire of Trebizond rather than the Byzantine Empire, see Acrinet (http://www.prismanet.gr/acrinet/en/sined_venice_25-6-2004.shtml); so is not necessarily typical of Byzantine costume.
