Post by: strangefellow on 04 November 2014, 08:41:18 PM
Hi guys.

A quick couple of questions.

1: does any of you have any links to information on austrian uniforms from this period?

2: did prussian infantry wear the pickelhaube? All pictures i have found shows them in feldmutze

Thankd in advance

Welcome. Austrian uniforms for infantry were very similar to 1866, apart from hussars who were still in the '59 uniform. Prussians were also similar to 1866 in helmets and feldmutze. The boots were shorter than in '66 but I wouldn't get picky about that. Both armies wore white ambands on the left arm to show they were part of the same alliance. Best info I have come across is Bruce Weigle's rulebook, '1859', which also covers 1864 with masses of illustration and info on weapons, tactics etc.

Hi Strangefellow,

To get a feel for how it looks, I would recommend the grosser generastab website. It has a collection of 1930s cigarettte cards headed Knotel and Lezius, and they cover the the Napoleonic period, and then the "Wars of Unification" (I appreciate that coming from Denmark this might not be the term you would use!). This shows German uniforms foe the three wars 1864, 1866, and 1870-71. The Austrians creep into it for thier contribution in 1864, and the main types they deployed are depicted. These are pretty accurate cards, and widely used as uniform references. Otherwise, Osprey produces two references on the Austrian entitled The Austrian Army 1836-1866. The first volume is infantry. The second is cavalry. They are by Darko Pavlovic, and are both pretty good. Sadly, there is not one that covers the artillery.
