Hi all
What do you prefer matte or gloss varnish on your figures
Take care
Andy
I tend to use spray matt varnish but then varnish the shiny bits with gloss applied with a brush.
So, basically both, depending on the intended effect.
Matt, spray as I think most on here know from my weather reports ;)
I find light shining off gloss obscures shading and details, also reminds me of toy soldiers
Would consider painting some gloss on armour but not much of that in AWI or WWI :)
Gloss figures also more difficult to photograph
Only time I like seeing gloss figures is for a retro-Small Wars type game
Gloss (Johnston's Klear) followed by Matt, followed by more gloss on shiny bits...
All brushed.
Matt spray every time for me
Matt.
Cheers - Phil
Nice to see my opinions confirmed, but then I'm always RIGHT :P

Can't submit a vote as I prefer satin varnish. I find matt dulls the figures too much.
I dont really think it Matt ers, and its what you prefer. and if we disagree we can always Gloss over it.
I have started to using a final Satin varnish on hair, when I'm painting larger (28mm) boardgame minis...
Matt. I prefer to brush on Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Varnish. Never once had any issues with white residue or other disasters I've had with Spray Varnish. For flags and especially on larger scale horseflesh or skin I use satin varnish (Vallejo).

Aksu
Always Vallejo matt, brushed on. Flattest varnish I've found so far and it doesn't react with the underlying paint so preliminary gloss coat not required.
Satin for me. Matt is a bit too flat for my tastes, plus with prolonged handling figures will tend to go satin in places.
My musings for what they're worth:

It has now - I just hit the wrong button. Numpty.
Matt for me, every time. Contrary to wot I just voted ;)
Matt varnish Always although I also tend to pick out glossy bits and some metals with the original colours or gloss varnish.
Bayonets need to gleam in the early morning sun! :D
