Lovely sculpts Techno! Cheers mate.
As voted for by you guys, first few stands of Mongol Light Horsemen. Really enjoyed these once I got going, decided to limit the pallet slightly.

Still plenty of variety in that slightly limited palette, works well. You can now shift your palette slightly for each unit to give them their own identity ;)

Some of your best stuff. Love the basing! :-bd :-bd
Mollinary
Thanks chaps.
Yes 30x40mm bases.
Verrrrry pretty. But you'll need to have an entire table set up with that steppe grass finish to make it look right.
Suggestion: a few skeletons in the grass (as in the opening shots of Alexander Nevsky).
Agree with others some of your best to date!
Really very nice indeed Will 8).
cracking stuff Will
Very nice, the bases set them off a treat.
I do like the look of these chaps!
The different directions of the figures on the bases really gives a skirmish look, consider it stolen ;)
I'd maybe try using a different background to white for the photos, I think it has made them come out a bit too dark?
That, and the sun was setting...
It's almost poetic.
The Mongols riding out of the setting sun.
Here is another horde ... http://www.exmouthwargames.org.uk/index.php/forum/ancients-to-medieval/20-mongols.html?start=6#454
Those are very nice.
Both sets are very nice. 8)
As far as I am concerned, one of the best wargaming sights -in any scale- is a whole army of Mongols. Great little chaps all round.
... and my Mongols support WHUFC ;) Just need some Millwall victims to ride over.
Looking great, Will !

That's so weird...so do mine. :) :)
Er, when would the two sets of hooligans thugs supporters ever come into contact, except in the cup at very irregular intervals?
If West Ham get relegated or Millwall hit the big time...neither seems possible in their current positions. Still, 27 years between fixtures is not long in football for grudges and rivalry to be remembered.
And just to keep the post alive, Mad Lemmy...you need more Mongols!
MORE MONGOLS MORE ..... MORE MORE

Very nice indeed. Also interesting to see how well the tufts look with 10mm figs, I think some of my 10mm figures may get 'tufted' soon.
Making good progress there.
Still looking good. How many do you have? (Whatever you say It's bound to be not enough.)
12 bases...
Or
Not enough...
Very nice indeed

What about DBA as a stop gap? Also, that's 9 more bases than my Sassanid's.
Do you have an enemy for them, Will, or are you reliant on another player?
Love the terrain effect! so nice as always

You are right there. 12 bases of 3 is...er...36. Nowhere near enough.
I have 286 cavalry all painted (16 Irregular and 2 Pendraken units) and have another 36 Pendraken cav and 30 inf to paint and it's about enough for my table size. Mind you, I do have nearly 400 Chinese infantry and 71 Chinese cavalry (all Irregular) and 243 Polish infantry and 96 Polish cavalry (all Pendraken) to face them. Still working on the Khwarizmians -only 99 cav and 60 inf (mix of Pendraken and Irregular) at the moment.
Subedai may be right, I think I need more Mongols! Some will be defecting to Tibet for the autumn season...
Definitely need more bases!

Good going mate. They'll look terrific when painted.

Basic method is: Sand and pva then ink, paint, drybrush, pva wash, flock, clump, scatter...
I don't often putty bases, usually snow or 3dbases.

Now those I like.
Just a quick note, a
tumen was anywhere between 5 - 10,000 strong on campaign with 10,000 being the 'paper strength' so I was wondering about your figure scale. The Mongols worked on a decimal scale so 10 warriors were in an
arban, 10
arbat made an
jagun (100), ten
jagut was a
mingghan of 1,000 -which was probably the main battlefield unit, much like a modern battalion- and ten
mingghat made up a
tumen. Forces of two or more
tumat made a
tuk.
It's all to scale, not 1:1 mate! 😛
Just saying. You never know, it might come up in a pub quiz and you can wow your mates with your esoteric knowledge. :) :)
Kind of knew that bit due to Conn Iggulden, just reading 'Bones of The Hills', lots of Tumen action. :)
Conn Iggulden's Mongol series as a reputable historical reference...hmmm.
Was meant to go out for a game of Blücher tonight, but due to family illness my opponent had to cancel.
So I broke out the paints:

Just needs basing and banners...
Look forward to seeing them finished off, Will.

So do I mate! ;)
Make sure you get the right can for the varnish on these and undercoat for the next lot...
Good stuff :)
It's chucking down here, so no varnish today unless I want frosty the snow-Mongol! :'(
I've had to resort to undercoating by hand, it's unconscionable!
I still do that for all my painting! :-[
Odd that, because I've just made a spraying box for undercoating, although I then go over it to obtain full coverage, Still too terrified to spray varnish, but a club member who does commissions swears by the matt spray supplied by Warlord Games, but won't touch Humbrol with a barge pole.
I would use a spray box but I'd have to spray in the house the missus would kill me for the fumes :o
I've sometimes tried the shed but it's so full it's a wee bit awkward and is down the end of the garden so I get wet anyway ;)
Spray varnish is a wonder - I like Warlord/Army Painters anti-shine stuff as well, it's really good!
Sand applied to bases this morning.
Come on, get on with it, still waiting for the pics. :)
I haven't used spray undercoat for about twenty years and spray varnish for about thirty. Found that I still had to go over bits that they had missed so now I use enamel for both and acrylics for everything else.
These look terrific. I love the basing.

I must get more of mine painted. Too many figures, too little time.
Done so far:
12 original bases (mostly Light Horse)
8 light horse bases,
12 medium cavalry bases,
8 extra heavy cavalry.
To paint:
10 extra heavies,
4 mediums,
8 slingers,
3 generals,
And a camp.
By third of October and Derby!!
They are coming on really well

Looking good, that man !
The yurts are rather spiffy ! 8)

Inked the bases this morning.
Looking good
Take care
Andy
All those little gers fit nicely together on the base. (Yurt is a Turkic word for a semi permanent dwelling; if you are talking about Mongols it's a ger.)
And in Tibetan? ;)
After conquest by the Mongols in 1240 it was probably ger but before then a guess would be it was a word meaning 'a-house-that-sticks-like-sh*t-to-the-side-of-a-mountain'. :)
Just got lance flags to do...
Sooooooooo close.

Hope to get some action shots this weekend too!
Great stuff, you are a painting machine, how do you get so much stuff done. Love the lego general and the minion.
Borderline insomnia... Goes with the madness! ;)
They were well worth the wait, lovely stuff. The Qagan on his personal hillock is a nice touch as are the lance pennants...and Gersville looks the business. (I'd still back my Snoopy Khan against your Big Fella any day.) :)

I have the Mexican version of that with my Maximilian Adventure stuff! :)
Obviously a canine of many guises.
Lemmey congratulations for such lovely army!
APOSTROPHE WARNING!!!
I know the rest of this thread is long dead, but I finally found an excuse to paint my Mongol foot archers! For Rollcall in April, they are being re-purposed as Ak Koyunlu (also known as the White Sheep Turcomans, an Oghuz tribal confederation that held land south of the Pontic mountains.
Welllll, horse archers in a cold climate... I guess in the C15th there might have been some Mongol influence! ;)

Nice job on those! :-bd

Specially for cross borders raids to Techno's?!
Nice :)
Nah.....There should be some balwen sheep in that lot, if you're raiding Techno Towers.....Can't see a single one. ;)
Cheers - Phil
You are wise in the ways of the sheep!
Saw one poor little b*gger about a minute after it had been born a couple of days ago.
What a start to life, in such freezing conditions.
The balwen don't belong to us, but to a young friend of ours.
Pants...I've forgotten how to link images from the net.

I hope you're not trying to pass those off as your own work, Will. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil
No, I cant paint that well
Lovely figures, great fun to paint,
They will be used as Kurdish lancers in MeG, so one unit is majority yellow, the other majority green.
Lemon-ish and Lime-ish Kurd-ish! To be added to my mongols when they pretend to be Ak Koyunlu (White Sheep Turkomen)
