Title: Mad Lemmey's Mongols
Post by: Duke Speedy of Leighton on 11 October 2014, 06:51:18 PM
Lovely sculpts Techno! Cheers mate.

As voted for by you guys, first few stands of Mongol Light Horsemen. Really enjoyed these once I got going, decided to limit the pallet slightly.

Still plenty of variety in that slightly limited palette, works well. You can now shift your palette slightly for each unit to give them their own identity  ;)

Verrrrry pretty. But you'll need to have an entire table set up with that steppe grass finish to make it look right.

Suggestion: a few skeletons in the grass (as in the opening shots of Alexander Nevsky).

I do like the look of these chaps!

The different directions of the figures on the bases really gives a skirmish look, consider it stolen  ;)

I'd maybe try using a different background to white for the photos, I think it has made them come out a bit too dark?

If West Ham get relegated or Millwall hit the big time...neither seems possible in their current positions. Still, 27 years between fixtures is not long in football for grudges and rivalry to be remembered.

And just to keep the post alive, Mad Lemmy...you need more Mongols!

You are right there. 12 bases of 3 is...er...36. Nowhere near enough.

I have 286 cavalry all painted (16 Irregular and 2 Pendraken units) and have another 36 Pendraken cav and 30 inf to paint and it's about enough for my table size. Mind you, I do have nearly 400 Chinese infantry and 71 Chinese cavalry (all Irregular) and 243 Polish infantry and 96 Polish cavalry (all Pendraken) to face them. Still working on the Khwarizmians -only 99 cav and 60 inf (mix of Pendraken and Irregular) at the moment.

Basic method is: Sand and pva then ink, paint, drybrush, pva wash, flock, clump, scatter...
I don't often putty bases, usually snow or 3dbases.

Now those I like.
Just a quick note, a tumen was anywhere between 5 - 10,000 strong on campaign with 10,000 being the 'paper strength' so I was wondering about your figure scale. The Mongols worked on a decimal scale so 10 warriors were in an arban, 10 arbat made an jagun (100), ten jagut was a mingghan of 1,000 -which was probably the main battlefield unit, much like a modern battalion- and ten mingghat made up a tumen. Forces of two or more tumat made a tuk.

Make sure you get the right can for the varnish on these and undercoat for the next lot...

Good stuff :)

It's chucking down here, so no varnish today unless I want frosty the snow-Mongol!  :'(

I've had to resort to undercoating by hand, it's unconscionable!

I still do that for all my painting!  :-[

Odd that, because I've just made a spraying box for undercoating, although I then go over it to obtain full coverage, Still too terrified to spray varnish, but a club member who does commissions swears by the matt spray supplied by Warlord Games, but won't touch Humbrol with a barge pole.

Post by: toxicpixie on 14 August 2015, 11:38:10 AM
I would use a spray box but I'd have to spray in the house the missus would kill me for the fumes  :o

I've sometimes tried the shed but it's so full it's a wee bit awkward and is down the end of the garden so I get wet anyway ;)

Spray varnish is a wonder - I like Warlord/Army Painters anti-shine stuff as well, it's really good!

Come on, get on with it, still waiting for the pics.  :)

I haven't used spray undercoat for about twenty years and spray varnish for about thirty. Found that I still had to go over bits that they had missed so now I use enamel for both and acrylics for everything else.

All those little gers fit nicely together on the base. (Yurt is a Turkic word for a semi permanent dwelling; if you are talking about  Mongols it's a ger.)

After conquest by the Mongols in 1240 it was probably ger but before then a guess would be it was a word meaning 'a-house-that-sticks-like-sh*t-to-the-side-of-a-mountain'.  :)

They were well worth the wait, lovely stuff. The Qagan on his personal hillock is a nice touch as are the lance pennants...and Gersville looks the business. (I'd still back my Snoopy Khan against your Big Fella any day.)  :)

APOSTROPHE WARNING!!!

I know the rest of this thread is long dead, but I finally found an excuse to paint my Mongol foot archers! For Rollcall in April, they are being re-purposed as Ak Koyunlu (also known as the White Sheep Turcomans, an  Oghuz tribal confederation that held land south of the Pontic mountains.
Welllll, horse archers in a cold climate... I guess in the C15th there might have been some Mongol influence! ;)

And I couldn't help but find a Legendary White Sheep General!

Saw one poor little b*gger about a minute after it had been born a couple of days ago.
What a start to life, in such freezing conditions.

The balwen don't belong to us, but to a young friend of ours.

Pants...I've forgotten how to link images from the net.

Lovely figures, great fun to paint,
They will be used as Kurdish lancers in MeG, so one unit is majority yellow, the other majority green.
Lemon-ish and Lime-ish Kurd-ish! To be added to my mongols when they pretend to be Ak Koyunlu (White Sheep Turkomen)
