Title: SYW British coat colour

Hi can any one suggest a colour today paint SAW British on a black under coat I am going today derby on sat so hope today get something there

Welcome to the Forum Docfin. If you are painting straight on to black undercoat go for a standard red and highlight with scarlet. You need colours to be lighter than normal on a black undercoat. I found this out the hard way when painting SYW Austrian dragoons.

Bear in mind it faded fast. A mix of carmine and burnt sienna might be right.

Thank for the quick reply. I will most likely use my 6mm technique and dry brush white very lightly before painting.

That's what I used to do, but now I prime white and then wash black so that detail stands out.

Bear in mind also that, whilst the rank and file uniforms quickly weathered to a brick red, those of the officers were made of much better material and would probably remain a true scarlet for longer.
