Test piece.
Whilst waiting for inks to dry on the Mongols (yes they are on their way :P ) I tried these.
Then I based them...
:D
Waiting for standards at Derby, then I can do command stands.

Brr...nicely done, Will 8)
And they told us it would be over by Christmas! And still Paris holds out. :o
Nice one, Will.
Very nice
Take care
Andy
Oh dear, Germans at the gates of Paris in 1864 - still they look very good and I'm sure they'll show up the Austrians in Schleswig.
Told you it was a long war. :D
35th and 60th Regiments finished.
:D
A full unit, using previously completed stand on one end:

Nice job indeed.
Hi Lem,
As you know, I am a big fan of your work (if you sense the word but marching towards this sentence, you are right! :D) but, I am not sure the basing does justice to these. I think they need some form of foliage/grass to provide contrast with the snow - at the moment they are a bit black and white and two dimensional. Your Mongols basing is perfect, a bit of that with the snow would, I think bring these to life!
Mollinary
I know, just trying to work out how to retro foliage it...

I have always understood that convincing snow basing is the most difficult to carry off. Consequently, not surprisingly, I have never tried it!
Good luck! :D
Mollinary
What happens in the spring? Does the base melt and the figures fall off? :-\
The purveyors of Christmas cheer (and, yes, our local garden centres are already fully stocked) use a small amount of glitter to give a crystaline effect to their "snow".
The only thing I can think of that might do that sort of job is a very light sprinkling of granulated sugar (seriously!). I used it some years ago as texturing on 10mm bases and it hasn't melted or degraded, although I did originally paint over it to secure it. I would, however, suggest you experiment with it first before going ahead. :-B
They do have GF9 snow scatter on them... ;)
They're a grim looking bunch, but I bet they're quick to paint.
I was hit by inspiration, so I added to my Winter Prussians, only some 5 years later! :d
I took on board Mollinary and Cameronian's advice from 2014, and added folliage to the bases to break them up. I also decided that mixing them in with the originals, as shown in the latter photos, adds life to the whole group.

They look cracking! Good things are worth waiting for etc :)
Look really good to me.
I love the challenge of creating a snow base, which is not as easy as it might seem. I do like having some kind of shrubbery or a fallen tree limb or something though to help break it up. In fact once I finish the last two elements for my Muscovite army I will be giving them a snow theme base - but it will be more of an early spring with some of the snow having melted but still have some ice over water areas and snow on the ground.
When I did my Hero element of Lady Snowblood for my Ninja army I elected to do her on a snow base ,taking it from the dramatic final scene of the first movie. You can see her here and a brief description of the conversion work involved (If you liked the "Kill Bill" movies, they are basically a remake of "Lady Snowblood", just as "The Magnificent Seven is a western remake of "The Seven samurai").

This brief clip of the last scene is the only one I could find, but it will give you an idea. Yes, I know she is wearing her butterfly kimono in that scene but I am a real fan of green and white and yellow and white as costume combinations so went with that one from a different scene in the movie.

Finally, not trying to steal this thread, just wanting to share some thoughts and efforts on doing snow bases.

These look stunning!
Looking damn fine, Will !! :)
Cheers - Will.

Seen worse ! ;)
Superb, the basing really brings them to life!
Massive improvement on the original bases. Great looking unit and commander.
Thanks chaps

Very nice, indeed, Will. 8)

Oh boy, they look cold! Very impressive basing. Have you considered using Russian Crimea dragoons for winter Prussian dragoons. I recently bought some 6mm Crimean figures to get a winterised look for doing the battle of Poupry in the 1871 rulebook. Also Russians in greatcoat and field cap could work for Prussians in greatcoat and feldmutze.
Very nice work Will 8).
Love those Red Hussars! Splendid work all round..
Thank you all.
Mollinary, means a lot.
Seriously evocative figures, well done.
Just noticed the command figure of Wintzingerode animated and with a monocle in perfect position, excellent.
These look grrat! Especially the dragoons look dynamic!
The contrast of the figures against the beautiful basing is great. Superb!
It is only on looking at them again that I have noticed the hoof prints in the snow, brilliant :-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Lovely work Lemmey.....the snow effect you use looks fantastic.
Thanks guys,
Its only milliputt, a brown wash, two white highlights and GF9 snow scatter.
Just takes an age to sculpt and dry.
Snow effect is good .... glad you avoided yellow ... :P
Extras for the Prussians, ready for a PBEM on Wednedsay night!

Are you tempted by the new greatcoated Prussians? Has an order gone in?
Yes and no... ;D
Looking damn fine, Will ! :-bd

Don't think I could get up the courage to do something like this. Brrrrr.... ;)
Really like your cavalry!
Well done. The finished effect is very close to some of the FPW winter art work
I've seen and very evocative (particularly the last picture).
Phil
Really like those. I will put some snowy bases together as I have a huge numb er of unpainted FPW, including Prussians and Bavarians in greatcoat, and also planning to get a snowy mat.
