It's a most rewarding conflict to game.
Great period to get interested in Shecky. Also it is supported by a wide range of rules and three companies, at least, producing 10mm figures. The most comprehensive is Pendraken, but Old Glory and Irregular have some useful items.

You seem to use the side of the brush a lot more than I do. At several points I was expecting you to to paint along a line e.g. on the flags. Is there a particular reason for that?
Also does anyone else varnish before washing? A lot of people seem to take a lot more 'care' than me when it comes to washes, flow agents, floor polishes, inks, ... I just dilute some paint :-/

In answer to Shecky, yes it is a great period to research and game, some argue that it was the real First World War! It has plenty of Character(s) is very colourful but sadly gets overshadowed by Napoleonics, another great love of mine.

I noticed when you were boxing in the colours on the flag that rather than draw the brush along the line (as you did when painting the musket barrel) you were using short strokes from the line into the area to be coloured. You used this approach in a couple of other places as well.
Curious if there was a particular reason.
I understand why you did it when feathering the highlights, but not for the blocking in.

Oh I'm quite aware of the fascination of the SYW. I used to have over 2000 15mm figures (sold them off about 10 years ago) and still have about the same number in 6mm.
I was very into the period about 20 years ago but then I moved and went into a dark period for wargaming. I didn't game, paint or buy a single figure from about 1997 until 2004. That's when I found a group of gamers who were building armies for Might & Reason in 6mm.
Now I want to collect 10mm SYW but I'm undecided on the rules. There are a lot of things I like about M&R - it's a very fun game if you're opponent isn't Prussian. And that's the issue I have with the game. Right now I'm looking for something a little different. I want something where I can fight the an entire battle, like Kolin, Gross Jagersdorf, etc., in 3-4 hours; it needs to be multi-player; and does not require tracking individual figures.
Oh, and I need at least $2000 so I can build sizeable forces for Britain, France, Prussia, Austria and Russia.

Have you considered Volley & Bayonet, does large battles extremely well for several groups I know of.

The simple answer is it's a bad habit, I should use long smooth strokes of the brush to create these lines, please do as I say, not as I do! 8)

But is it me :-\ ? I think they should be LIGHT grey ?
When I read some articles about this era I thought their clothes were very light grey. Specially in campaign, where they were "damaged" with extensive use..
( I'm NOT an expert, and I think mine are too white. They're ok on my paint table, but look white in photos)

I've heard their clothes described as pearl grey.
I think it's fair to say their is no definitive evidence about the true colour of every French uniform. It was somewhere between white and a grade of grey. The colour I chose feels right to me.
