so before i start yet another project can any of you gents give any advice on books rules uniform info ect
thanks in antisipation conster just noticed its in wrong place
Hi. If you want one book on the uniforms of the period you could have a look at "From pike to Shot" by Grant. Its packed with info, the only thing it lacks really is flags. Rules wise you might look at "Pike and Shot" from Warlord games or "Beneath the Lily Banners" which is more period specific (disclosure; I sculpt the 28mm figures of the author Barry Hilton's Warfare Miniatures).
If you haven't already take a look at Barry's site,

and blog.

Lots of inspiration and info to be had on both.
Don't know how you would get hold of it, but moons ago someone produced an immense series with dozens of colour illustrations in Wargames Illustrated or Miniature Wargames on this period. Now I am certain someone on the forum will know more about this and give more specific information.
Probably Mark Allen's series on the Grand Alliance and Armies of Louis XIV. Drawings were slightly simplistic but very colourful and inspiring, usually taken straight from period sources.
Wargames Illustrated produced a limited run CD for £30 a while back, if you email them you might be able to get it still.
Edit; Some of Mark's articles are given away here for free, by WI/FOW, should give you an idea of what they are like.

He covers the English and the Dutch well, most of the French, but the series ran out of steam before the French cavalry (though the Maison du Roi horse were covered)
This place gives you oodles of info on all nationalities in the Great Northern War if you are interested.
