Underwhelmed is an understatement =)
Good to see Clara though :x
The Beeb must be really worried about ratings if they are having to wheel the Daleks out in Episode 2
It was Ok ish...It was the first one, they are usually a bit poor, though all the way through I wondered why I kept hearing snippets of " Lets go fly a kite", maybe it was something to do with the lady at the end with the umbrella. Not sure who she was and if she had been in it before.
I suppose the comedy trio were in for a bit of continuity, glad to see the back of Matt Smith though
I quite liked it.
Clara always helps :x

I felt the same about Tennant. Too shouty. >:(
Still an Eccleston fan (of the new era) and enjoyed Smith's portrayal even if it was aimed at a younger audience. Suits my mental age... ;D

Yes, he has still been the best of the new era
Ecclestone was too much an action hero hard man, for my taste, as Dr Who.
Matt Smith's Doctor reminded me of Tom Baker's version - my favourite of the original run.
David Tennant has been my favourite of the new run so far but after tonight I have hopes of Peter Capaldi.
The introductory/ regeneration episodes seem to me to be the weakest of the episodes for each Doctor of the new run.
Overall I enjoyed it and look forward to next week and the perennial Dalek episode.
For sure Jenna-Louise Coleman and Catrin Stewart add to the watchability :)
I have a feeling that Peter Capaldi will turn out like more like Eccleston, quite dark and serious. And the episode following a regeneration always has him acting a bit strange - I remember feeling WTF when Patrick Troughton first appeared and started playing a flute, but he still turned out to be a tough cookie. Yes, lets get the Daleks out of the way so we can move on to something different. And suddenly Clara is looking all grown up - I'll be in my bunk - to mix my SF metaphors.
I'm sure at one early point he shouted at the dinosaur "Haw, big man, shut it!" ;D
He is probably the most Scottish Doctor yet, out of a pretty good selection, so he gets my vote! :D
Took a while to get going, but we enjoyed it in the end. Like the references to the Scottish referendum as well, plus previous Doctors etc. I like Peter Capaldi as an actor, so looking forward to seeing how his character will develop. The current Radio Times has a guide to all the episodes, which helps makes sense of the 'Heaven' bit at the end.
I really rather enjoyed it. I've got quite high hopes for Mr Capaldi too.
What got me, was that I misheard the starting time as 7:15 instead of 7:50, so I rushed in a few minutes before a quarter past seven......What on EARTH is 'Tumble' supposed to be ? =O =O =O =O
I went back outside for half an hour an helped Mrs T with the gee-gees......Dearie, dearie me !
Cheers - Phil.
I also caught the last four minutes of Tumble. Is this TV for the lobotomised?
Tumble - having only seen the trailers. I assume is an excuse to make celebrities look stupid and fall over a lot while trying to do gymnastics!
They're running out of things to get celeb to do. My guess will be that the next will be celeb assassins. "this week Kerry Katona is going to attempt to take out a high ranking minister with just one pound of C4, and will Kevin Pederson allow for windage in his third attempt on the scientist?"
Actually ... I'd watch that.
I had high hopes that Clara was going to be the Dr. Female Dr Who. Might be a bit different.

Saw a bit of this..Compared to the programme that was on ITV as the same time Tumble was much drier
We saw the last few minutes of Tumble, which was truly, truly awful. Who the hell thought that this would make good primetime TV? I feel sorry the the judges and presenters who have to endure this live every week, talk less of the audience. I hope they didn't have to pay...

Could we not assassinate the celebs instead - a sort of Hunger Games for the famous?
Although this may be the side effect of giving them high explosives to play with...
I have long argued that the two most popular types of show on TV are reality shows and nature programs and that a combination of the two would be a sure winner.
Put a bunch of wannabees or D-List celebs in a house together that's wired for sound and vision.
Every Friday night freeze the house floors and release a large, hungry tiger into the house. Once a contestant has been eaten remove tiger.
Repeat until only one contestant remains uneaten.
"Celebrity Get Me Out Of Big Nature Watch Deathmatch On Ice" anyone?
It's got to be a winner. Surely the Dutch already do it?

That would work. Let's start with Towie.
;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil.
I'd watch 'Celebrity Cannibal Island'.
Celebrities are trapped on a 'desert island' with no food and only a blunt pen knife each, the last uneaten celebrity is the winner...and the following week gets a sharp pen knife and a whole bunch of new celebrities!
There is no escape from 'Celebrity Cannibal Island'...MAW-HA-HA!
As for the new Dr Who, I don't watch it...in fact I stopped watching it when a space Titanic crashed into Buckingham Palace...just how 'silly' is that? Come on ask yourself seriously, is this classic Dr Who? Since they've been spending money on it the scripts and plotlines appear to have gone out the window.
I've been a watcher since Hartnell so I've had time to compare them all. Liked most of them although the music for some of the Pertwee shows got right on my t*ts. Wasn't too keen on Davidson or McCoy, but the latter crop have all been good as has the writing for them. Some of the plot lines are a bit suss but after all this is Dr Who.
I also played 'Spot the Reference to previous Dr's' with Ma Subs (who thinks Tennant rocks by the way) and thought Capaldi's initial slightly manic and disorientated style was well done.
Overall, I'll watch the rest to see how it pans out.
The Doctors in order, best to worst.
1. Tom Baker - the best by far, he is THE Doctor, the rest are A doctor
2. Matt Smith
3. Christopher Eccleston
4. Sylvester McCoy
5. William Hartnell
6. Patrick Troughton
7. Peter Davison
8. Paul McGann
9. Colin Baker
10. Jon Pertwee
11. David Tennant
Peter Capaldi - TBC, but looking like 2nd or 3rd in first evidence.

Such a personal thing. I'd go
1. David Tennant
2. Tom Baker
3. Matt Smith
4. William Hartnell - without whom none of the others would have had a role to play
5. Christopher Eccleston - great actor but too macho for Dr Who IMHO
6. Paul McGann
7. Patrick Troughton
8. Sylvester McCoy
9. Colin Baker
10. Peter Davison - like him as an actor but not as Dr Who
11.Jon Pertwee - got on my nerves
I'd agree with "Peter Capaldi - TBC, but looking like 2nd or 3rd in first evidence."
John Hurt as the pre-Doctor Doctor was a lovely cameo
Now I really liked Christopher Eccleston in the role - I quite like it when the Doctor kicks ass. I have a feeling Peter Capaldi is going to be excellent; cerebral, sinister and quite hard.

We still havent forgiven The Netherlands for inventing Big Brother
Was Greg Dyke involved.
I've watched Doctor Who since late in the Hartnell era. The first episode or two of a new Doctor is always a rocky road until the new bloke gets settled in. This episode itself I found a bit blah. It was nice to see the characters of Jenny and Madam Vastra rounded out a bit more (although a young Victorian woman would not have dreamed of whooping and clapping like an American cheerleader!) I think Michelle Gomez (who is as mad as a very mad person - check out her performance in the TV series Green Wing) will turn out to be the Master in female guise. Maybe Moffatt is trying harder to write better female characters at last?
And there was the usual DW nod to left-wing politics. Did anyone notice the newspaper article the Doctor read concerned the dreadful fate of one Margaret Roberts? Margaret Thatcher's maiden name? ;)

Michelle Gonez is excellent - first saw her in The Book Club and she's not disappointed since. Love her in Green Wing and more recently in Bad Education :D I'd love her to be the Master!
Only caught the new episode half way thru - have trouble getting Capaldis character in The Thick of It out of my head, but he's good enough that I think once settled he'll be a cracking Doctor.

Just watched the programme. Was not desperately impressed - found myself fast forwarding some drawn out bits. I found the confusion by someone who knows he regenerates a little ludicrous
Capaldi I think will make a good Doctor, once he has settled in.
I am still not convinced by the Paternoster Gang. I particuarly dislike the politically correct pushing of the "relationship" of Madame Vastra and Jenny - they must have mentioned the gay relationship at least three times in an hours episode, hardly necessary and not relevant to the storyline in this episode or any other previous episode. We only need to know they are freinds so that we understand that Madame Vastra a silurian with a taste for human flesh will not eat Jenny. ( no pun intended - despite the length of a Silurians tongue) :d

Tonight's episode...
More questions than answers, which I liked. Liked the whole idea, but not sure it wasn't rushed at the climax, which weakened it, but Capaldi carried it well.
But... Without spoilers... Cool!
I thought it was about to be rushed, but they just about avoided it- maybe needed 5 more minutes. Its the pressure to make it sale-friendly; 45 mins is an hour on a commercial (ie US) channel.
People do romanticise 'classic Who'; the 4 x 30 mins were often drawn out. I'd like to see more 2 x 45m episodes, but apparently they are not the easiest thing. They can be more costly than 2 singles (not sure how).
I feel the New Who suffers from the same problem as a lot of truly Scottish actors playing Scottish accents - they want to sound Scottish, but still be understood, and it comes off sounding very stiff and clipped, at least to my ears.
Apart from that, though, quite good. The idea that Daleks can't just be reused infinitely as just plain bad guys is, itself, becoming a bit clichéd, but it was carried off well enough
I think you three have just about said it all.
Not bad....But not an absolute classic, for me.
Cheers - Phil
I know what I miss - the cliffhangers. Each episode is a complete story, there's no "how is he going to get out of this one?" for a week.
I like Capaldi's Doctor and you can't fault his acting. The storys so far I've found a bit weak. Still, will stick with it as it's a family favourite.
Perhaps because I'm a Scot, I'm finding Capaldi easier to understand than Matt Smith but harder to follow than Tennant and Ecclestone.
I've watched quite a few "classic" Dr Who episodes recently, courtesy of a friend's DVD collection. The current series is easily as good as any of the old episodes I've been watching.
I think the writing is tighter these days, some of the dialogue in the old episodes seems terribly stilted to me now. As Harrison Ford is supposed to have said,"... you can type this sh*t, but you can't say it!"
I think we tend to remember the few truly great Dr Who episodes and draw a veil over the somewhat larger canon of rather dodgy ones! Though even now, after all these years, Dr Who remains a jolly good romp!
Jelly Baby anyone?
Yep.
I found the second episode an improvement. The storyline was better, although the whole heaven idea seems a bit wierd. Should I ever get there I hope heaven has better Totty than "Missy"
It's not just about looks you know.
I agree, you "don't look at the mantlepiece when your stoking the fire" - but "it is nice to tell the time sometimes"
And if I have to spend enternity there " I want better Totty".

Catty? I was going for down right insulting.
I'll be all purrs and fluffy toys when i) the totty thread starts including proper (or improper) nudes; ii) something resembling English becomes the standard medium on this board; and iii) when that paleontologically overdue Mexican range gets into production, preferably with Ch'in and Han Chinese too.
I'd better keep my claws sharp.
Goodness me! I hope that day never comes! FK being K would be like Churchill being sober, or Caesar being modest or Justin Beiber not being annoying.
I can't do anything about i) or iii) but I kan dessicate the english langwage good.

That really worked.
Yep, best episode yet. Still a bit confused re: who Clara really is, given her 'past' in the previous series. Still, good to keep the grey matter exercised.
I enjoy each one as a stand alone episode because unless an ongoing thread slaps me in the face every so often as a reminder I lose track of all the subtlety and life's too short to think about who the hell Clara is and what the rip in the fabric of time meant or who the bl**dy spaceman was. I preferred it when it was aimed at children, I could cope then. It's gone a bit too highbrow and intellectual recently. I'll still watch it though...just in case.
Agreed. :)
Cheers - Phil
Thought last nights episode particularly bland and uninteresting
I actually thought Dr Who was still aimed at kids as their target audience
I'd have said the last episode was classic Dr Who.
I'd have thought Dr. Who was aimed at teenagers and young adults rather than at children. Aimed at an older audience since the reboot though, I reckon.
