I'm still trying to figure out where it is I'm meant to be posting stuff on this forum, so in the meantime I'll just highlight the fact that I've started a new project (ACW battle of Raymond) and will be showing the progress over on my blog, here
http://projectsolowargame.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://projectsolowargame.blogspot.co.uk/)
And just to get the ball moving, here's one of the first pics (from a blog post), showing what I purchased on my visit to Pendraken.

Obviously, the pic's just showing an infantry brigade placed on the bases, for me to see what it would look like and how to have the figure compositions.
Cheers. Roy
Time to lift that brush and get cracking then.
I say put in some more 'shoulder to shoulder' is the order of the day ;)
Cheers,
Rob
I would say denser too!
Look forward to seeing that progress. :)
Cheers - Phil.

Just checked out some 10mm ACW units done this way, looked nice and realistic. But I've decided to not go for it (mainly due to costs) and stick with the four to a base look, which will hopefully allow for the paintjobs to be shown off. I suppose this is the reason why a lot of 28mm units are based so, and not shoulder to shoulder?
Anyway, cheers for the suggestion. It's appreciated.
Roy.
Hi there looking forward to seeing this project progress
Take care
Andy

I think it's mainly about costs indeed and for some people it doesn't have to look like any actual historical formation; it should represent one and that's okay too!
Cheers,
Rob
If cost is an issue, perhaps base them on 4 figs on 20x20 bases?
Made a start, by painting up some artillery crew figures.

Thank you for your comments. The infantry may not be positioned as they currently are, after painting. There may also be scenery placed alongside, or in front, of the figures, too. I haven't decided yet.
QuoteWith the sculpts being so small I'm not bothering to show contrast layering, as it just makes the figures look messy and unfinished to my mind. I prefer the solid, cleanly and smoothly painted finish, as shown above.
I know that the reds on the back (mainly the bottom) are meant to be on the hemline of the coat, but it looks better as I've painted it, thanks to the blue 'framing' the contrasting colour. At least that's my take. Anyway, when they are all based and on the gaming table, as long as they look good, that's all that matters, in my opinion.
- taken from off my blog post, where the backs of the figures are displayed as well.
It may be a bit picky but since I'm painting the ACW figures now for the website photo's too I had to make a decision on what to do with the trim on the coats/jackets.
Historically the colored trim was not applied on the so called sackcoats; only on the shelljacket and the knee long frockcoat (with a few exceptions on full cuffs and collars in the Confederate army). I therefore choose to paint the trim only on the typical shelljackets and not on the sackcoats.
I didn't know if you were aware of this (and if you're bothered of course ;)) but I thought I'd better tell. Would be a pity if you try to do them as historically as possible and then find out afterwards...
They look splendid, even if you would do them without the trim!
Cheers,
Rob
As I understand it the longer the war went on the less trim there was to be seen. Exception would be the Heavy Artillery units used as infantry in 1864.
I beg your pardon, I meant to say that it is my preference in this style of painting over the more contrasting style.
There being nothing wrong with this fashion of painting and I have employed it myself in the past.
There is no right or wrong way to paint and each of us have our own methods and likes and dislikes.
Sorry if I caused any offence with my earlier post.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of it (I'm only using photo's off google for reference), but truthfully I'm not that bothered. I just went along the route of whatever looks good, and thought having a bit of colour to the uniforms made it prettier. ;D
Those are coming along beautifully. 8)

Cheers. Since been back and altered a couple of bits - yes, the red trim being one (just couldn't live with it). The 1st artillery base is finished and the 2nd is now to be based, so should be finished tomorrow. I'll photograph it and put the battery up in the relevant photo' section of the forum.
Once again, big thanks for the compliments and the helpful advice. Much appreciated :-bd
Looking forward to see the pictures! :)
Hope you didn't feel too bad about the trim...? :(
Cheers,
Rob

No. Not really.
More annoyed with myself if anything, for not researching enough. And also for not realising the need to research in the first place.
What you wrote served as a reminder to me, that I need to be more disciplined and it brought it home to me in what's necessary when painting historically based uniforms. You learn from your mistakes as they say, and I've lived and learned, here. But if it hadn't been for yourself pointing out to me that I was in the wrong, then I wouldn't of known. For that a big thank you.
I still disagree with you all, over the shoulder-to-shoulder basing, however ;D We'll agree to disagree, no-doubt, over personal preference :)
The shoulder to shoulder basing is also the historical thing to do... not much use leaving the trim of the jackets if you're then not going to base them historically, is there...? :d (So sorry, just had to push on a bit ;) )
I'm now working on the Iron Brigade figures, the Sharpshooters and the Tiger Zouaves and although I have quite a bit of knowledge about ACW uniforms I still have to check for certain details; like the shoulderstraps on Berdan's Sharpshooters backpacks... I wasn't sure whether they should be black like the regular backpack straps (except those on some of the militia style 'hard'packs which were originally white of course) or in natural leather as I expected. It's the little things like that that drive a man insane... (especially if you've done 'em wrong and find out afterwards...)
Cheers,
Rob
I think Ginge may have a point about keeping it fun.

A coping mechanism, for me. Otherwise, I'd just become obsessive and ill, and then give up on the project. Another reason why I'm not going to be purchasing lots of books or straying away from units I don't need for the scenario I'm (hoping) to recreate. Learning from my past mistakes and trying to be more controlled in the hobby, is another theme, for me, with this project.
===
I'm hoping to get time to check out the other blogs on this board today. Slowly making my way through things on this forum.
As I always say, When you walk in a storm, Hold your head up high....
I guess keeping it fun is what a hobby should all be about indeed!
But having said that, and knowing myself, I always seem to wander off into the darkest corners of history's trivia jungle; but then again; that;s what I find fun :D
I started some 'fantasy' projects throughout the years to get away from the rivet counting and nit picking but in the end they always evolved into some semi-historical army; skeletons wearing detailed tartans, futuristic troopers based on German WW-2 uniforms and so on... I can't help myself. (Nor do I think anybody else can...)
For me personally the historical context and details are crucial but I can understand and respect other peoples motives and choices, don't worry! ;)
Cheers,
Rob
... I've been bad. I've been neglecting my Pendraken ACW project :(
This month I'm taking part in the Zomtober & Orctober Fest blogging community events.
Next month, I, at least, will be taking part in the Naval November event (I can't call it just a blogging event, as I'm trying to get the Steve Dean Forum member's to paint stuff up and post the pictures in one Community topic in the Pictures section of that forum, and the Google+ community The Wargames Club for Gentlemen is offering it's support as well).
More info. on all the above can be found over on my blog. If people want to do a Pendraken Miniatures version of Naval November (pirates, marines, WW1 tanks etc, oh and any boats that there is) then I'm sure that could be sorted out on this forum.
Anyway, the reason why I'm posting - I'm growing a mustache for the Men's Health Charity thingy Movember. I don't know exactly what that's going to entail, though it will unleashed at the Boro wargames show (hopefully, by then it'll be of Mexican proportions!)
More info. to be found here ~
http://projectsolowargame.blogspot.co.uk/p/my-movember-mustache.html (http://projectsolowargame.blogspot.co.uk/p/my-movember-mustache.html)
As I said, no idea what I'm going to do, so feel free to offer suggestions ... Anybody saying I should go to the Boro show in fancy dress can go and sit on a stingy nettle ;D
