Hi All.
Leon's popped me a note, to say he meant to mention he's away for a few days...so he'll deal with any queries on his return.
Have a great break, Leon !! :)
Cheers - Phil. (Behave yourselves ! ;))
Panic attack! Panic attack!
Has anyone got a brown paper bag???
Hope he's just taking a few days off to do something enjoyable.
Better still if he's gone to do some research on something. At Bovington say.
Is he back yet? :-S

I believe the answer to both questions is yes......Probably. ;)

Love the definite manner of that one.
IanS
Positively almost.
It's the not knowing that is the worst.
Do we at least know that he took clean underpants?
They don't use underpants in Smoggy.

I have to say the whole thing has gone to the dogs since the wedding. Firstly they're shoving orders out so fast they've arrived before you sent them - where's the delicious expectation? The peering through the letterbox to see if today will be the day? The time spent planning and reviewing what you've bought? - and now Leon has decided it's perfectly acceptable to slope off for a few days without asking us (the worms in the Pendraken tequila) for permission. Does he not realise that if it wasn't for us (the fish heads in the Pendraken star-gazy pie) he'd be a well adjusted, reasonable sane, happily married man - and none of us wants to se that do we? No, I definitely detect the rustle of petticoats in this wilfulness; there's more than a smack of Horace Wimp in this one. Milday definitely has her prettily beringed fingers in this pie.
Let's face it, it's the thin end of a very big wedge. Leon goes off without telling us for a few days; he thinks he enjoys himself away from the constant please, entreaties and bitching about why there isn't a LoA Kettle Drummer in Polynesian drag and so he thinks he wants to spend more time away. Next thing he'll be taking regular holidays, and complete weekends and before you know it he'll have got himself a proper job that pays real money and his life will be stress free and he'll be able to live a normal life, and he'll sell Pendraken to the Evil Empire and we (the inexplicable staining in the Pendraken underwear) will all have to buy Space-Aztecs (sorry Imperial Space-Aztecs) at grossly inflated prices and they'll close the top totty thread (which to be fair has been languishing a bit) and I will have no life! :'(

It's all going a bit Reggie Perrin!
I hear Leon's picketing Royal Mail HQ!
To get more paint pots in packages. ;)
Nicks back now once his Internet is properly up and running I'm sure we'll be inundated
With scantily clad young ladies

This suggests you consider Leon a responsible adult ................
This may be my fault
We went away last week. I put in an order a few days before we went, and asked he delay sending it, so it wouldn't be delivered while I was away.
Do you think he misunderstood the idea of the delay, and took that as permission to desert.

Well compared to the forum members - Yes. Compared to real adults - doubtful, after all he has to have M'lady in charge of him
I'm not sure that it helps that he looks about 14. To an old codger like me, that is.
I tend to think of him more as a carer.

Probably better than finding the naked contents of said clothes!
Only if there was an X-Box around.....

Of course, when Vimes goes away crime falls, because the criminals are scared of what will happen when he comes back and finds it went up...
The Thieves Guild charge more when he's away.
We're safe guys - order arrived this morning (mix of WW2 and ECW)
Just got back home, so I'll have a read through all of the posts now and see if you lot have been behaving yourselves!
Managed to tick a few animals off the 'Wanted List', including red squirrels, a heron and a single deer. A couple of eagles and pelicans as well, but I don't think the Bird of Prey centre counts...! :D
Yes..They We have. ;)
Good to see you back, Leon....Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Did indeed, Northumberland is an excellent part of the country, great scenery, lots to do and very friendly people. Definitely recommended, plus there's a castle every few miles!
:D
Ok - so who is going to sneak off sheepishly, excluding those in the Principality and those in far southern climes of course.

I'm off for a week walking based in Bellingham at the start of September.

I'm off for a week walking based in Bellingham at the start of September.
We drove through Bellingham on the way up to Kielder Water, and came close again heading to Vindolanda the next day. Are you walking any sections of the wall?
Walking the area around the Battle of Heaven field and also the area around Corbridge. Have walked large sections of the Wall in the past. Will also be visiting Otterburn battlefield and walking Dere Street into Scotland (before the border controls go up).
I had a quick wander up Walltown Crag after we did the museum, but I'd like to do a lot more of the Wall in the next few years. Sadly you can't cycle the proper wall, as that would have been a better option timewise. You can cycle near it obviously but it's not quite the same.
We also joined the English Heritage while we were away, so we'll be making use of that for Corbridge and Housesteads as well.
We often have week's holiday in Northumberland - as Leon says loads of castles, Roman stuff a bit further south, Newcastle and Durham if you need some shops (always good for Mrs Fred!)
Also beaches and hills (lots of hills!) it all seems very unspoilt and much less busy then heading south for holidays. Some bits can be a bit remote - we stayed near Otterburn one year, and spent a long time driving each day to get to places to see. Last year we stayed a bit inland from Bamburgh, just west of the A1 on the hills - with a great view out over the castle and the Farn Islands.
But Northumberland is COLD, WET, and WINDY.......
IanS
You don't go there to sunbathe you wazzerk! That's why Tenerife was invented.
He's back! He's back!

We were in Rothbury and found it similar. Vindolanda / Kielder / Lindisfarne were all over an hours drive away, but all in different directions!
It is a big county.

Its generally less of all 3 than the NW.
But yes a coat is generally better for the beach than swimming costumes!
Rothbury its self is nice - and the Armstrong house just outside is a great place to explore. But you really feel the distances when you want to go somewhere which appears fairly close.

We were tempted to go there, and loads of people we spoke to recommended it, but at £16 per adult it was about £80 for the 6 of us just to get in. Plus they want cash on the gate as well, no payment by card!
Yes, this is why we went for national trust membership, its around £100 a year - so at 1.5 visits you are quids in - as most NT properties seem to be around £10-20 a head
It's definitely a county where you need a car and time to explore. Some of the Roman remains north of the Wall are pretty spectacular, especially along Dere Street.

Ditto, and English Heritage
The best thing with EH is that you can get it with Tesco Vouchers at about 3:1 exchange rate. We tend to have just had 1 adult membership, which gets me and the kids in. Then the odd time my wife wants to go to a castle its only a few quid to get in - but with NT she tends to went to go to far more places, and they are much more expensive to get in, so we went for full family membership.
I do like with the memberships that you will just pop into places to see what they are like (or for a quick second or third visit) - and if you only spend half and hour there you feel you have had a good time, rather than thinking about how much you had to pay to get in.
Compared to places like Warwick castle that is hugely expensive, busy, and really rather underwhelming (especially considering the quality of the setting they have), I think EH and NT are great value for money.
We didn't bother with Alnwick Castle for that reason. I get that Harry Potter was filmed there, but £25 per adult to access the castle and gardens was far too much.
Went to Warwick on Friday - used Tesco vouchers so £7.50 a person - glad, would have been upset if we'd had to pay the £100 for all 4 full price. Merlin have disneyfied it. The castle is still good, but covered in food and merchandising tents- £6.95 for hotdog and chips - we took sandwiches. The dungeon is now a ghost tour thingie - like a walking ghost train for an extra £9 (no we didn't go).

Alnwick is just about ok. Though last time we got 1 adult & child ticket for the castle, and the same for the garden, then swapped around. But this was a second on third visit. The castle still has enough castle and military stuff to be good, the Harry Potter bits are just extras. And the gardens are really nice in their own right.
Great things about Alnwick Castle: a first edition of the complete works of Shakespeare and Charles I's shirt from his execution.
