Why is it, that the lazy way I get to the forum via Google.....It shows 878 posts in 54 topics ?
When there are, in fact, 122,491 posts in 8,656 topics.....A slight difference, I think you'd agree. :D
How does that sort of 'stuff' get updated on Google ?
Cheers - Mr Thicky.
Google "crawls" the web constantly. In other words, a bit of software (known as Googlebot) is constantly surfing pages, following every link it can find. Everything it finds is added to Google's horrifically huge database. When you do a search, it pokes around in the database looking for what you're after.
How often it updates a given page is determined by a formula that only Google knows.
The topic count you are seeing is from the "Forum Info" forum, not the whole forum.
Google's bots are only picking up on the Topics/Posts in the Forum Info board at the top of the Forum. They do the same with any other website, it's one of the reasons website builders will put a block of text / paragraph near the top of any websites so that Google pick up on it, usually giving a broad overview of what the website is/does. If you search for 'Pendraken Miniatures', the result should show the '10mm specialists, since 1992...' block of text underneath the news slideshows.
Their bots usually pick up on things quite quickly and update the search results within a week or two, so it's still showing the number of posts from a few weeks back, and not these new ones!

EDIT: Beat me to it Mr Phillips!
I understood both of the above, up to, and including the word, 'Google'....But thanks anyway chaps.
(I think I've got the gist, really. ;))

I think your explanation was clearer. I obviously need more coffee :)
Phil, the Google Fairy is really good at remembering stuff but not so good at arithmetic ... any clearer? :P
It can do simple arithmetic, at least:

For those who are easily amused, try any of the following:
- Do a Google search for the word 'tilt'.
- Type 'Do a barrel roll' into a Google search.
- Do a Google search for the word 'anagram' and watch for the 'Did You Mean...' result

It took me a moment to get it with tilt. Good one. :)

Google "crawls" the web constantly.
So long as it doesn't crawl the Edgeware Road....
